Well, no, honestly it wasn't meant to be aimed specifically at you.

Oh? You wanna take a look at the record again? You said:

As for the assertion that Monte has better credentials than the ENnie judges, reviewers included-- well, I think that's a transparent case of "hero worship."

The assertion in question is mine, and you are speaking in reply to the post in which I made it. And note that you refer to the "hero worship" as a singular case. How, pray tell, are reasonable readers supposed to get the idea that it is general or non-specific from that, hm?

Either you intended it to apply to me individually, or you completely neglected to take any steps to generalize the statement at the time.

So, pray tell me, what makes you such an authority on "hero worship" that you get to diagnose it (singularly or en masse) without asking any questions?

Oh, and since you've mentioned it elsewhere let's be absolutely clear - the assertion you called hero worship was that Monte had better credentials. Having credentials is not equivalent to being qualified. Credentials are merely one possible indicator that the bearer of the credentials might be qualified.

But I wouldn't want to accuse you of divining my motives through the aether or anything.

Good, because you'll find a distinct lack of statements to that effect. I have never addressed why you said it.

Oh, good lord.

You know what. I like games. I like books that enhance my game. I thought it would be cool to give the nod to people who help bring that to be.

If Monte wants to do the same thing, in a different way, that's cool.

I think some people's vehemence and tendency to disagree on petty details is, well, flabbergasting.

We all like games. Talking about games and making them better is cool. Petty bickering is not cool.

Umbran, didn't you already emphatically state that you are not a Monte fanboy? I don't know about the other people reading this thread, but that's good enough to tell me that Wulf's reaction to your previous statements is incorrect. Seems a bit redundant to take the podium again about it unless you're just in the mood to argue.

As to the topic at hand, Monte's idea is sound, even if the application is not. What it comes down to is, as Warlord Ralts said, don't buy it if you don't like it. In the same vein for publishers, don't submit to it if you don't like the terms.

See, there's a difference between, "God, that's a stupid idea," and "God, you're stupid." Most folks can tell the difference.

And some folks are so hung up on themselves, they can't.

What I like is the little discussion on Monte boards, the huge arguements here, and the fact that this subject hasn't even been mentioned that I've seen anywhere else. I'm thinking this is a mountain out of a mole hill.

And yet you continue to pop in and throw little shots. I'd be careful about rolling your eyes - the publishers and authors are at least arguing about something that will/might affect them. You, conversely, seem perfectly happy to snipe and encourage argument without any stake in the outcome at all.

Patrick Y.

Encourage argument? I don't intend to. Quite the opposite.

I think the whole argument is totally overblown - especially when some authors and publishers degenerate to calling (or intimating) that someone is a "fanboy" if they happen to like the idea of the product. That's hardly civil discourse.

I'm trying to point out (albeit bluntly) that a little perspective is needed.

So really, the "Year's Best d20" is mute, actually.

Emphasis added just in order to say I think you meant moot. Just brought it up cause I had a conversation not five minutes ago about getting the words confused.

* Malhavoc fans are hero worshipping fools who take everything Monte says as gospel.

* Monte isn't qualified to offer his opinion on what's best.

* Malhavoc should pay for entries, even though we could just mine the OGC for free, cut almost all ties to its source, and print the book without a single shred of evidence that clearly connects a given piece to its author.

To paraphrase some of the comments I've read:

MY HAT OF MONTE COOK AND D02 KNOW NO LIMIT!

Well spoken. And on that note, thread closed.
