While the art is up to Walt's usual standards, he does make the classic Elric artist mistake of giving Elric muscles. I really don't think he ever had 6-pack abs.

Forgivable since stormbringer is in Elric's hands, in effect the strength storm bringer bestows includes muscles.

If the muscles deflate when the albino doesn't have the sword, that would be cool.

That's a decent rationalization, but it's nothing more than that. Elric was intended to be the Anti-Conan. A fantasy hero without bulging muscles, who wasn't dedicated to saving the helpless maiden, who's sword was an EVIL artifact. There's no mention in the books of him looking like anything other than a 98lb weakling. Without his drugs or Stormbringer he was barely able to get out of bed.

It is a common flaw and not unique to Simonson. I love Michael Whelan's art work and his covers for the old DAW Elric editions are some of my all time favorite pieces of art, but even he drew Elric with muscles. Despite the fact that he reads the books and tries to do them so they relate to the story. His "Elric Demonslayer" artwork that was originally used for a limited edition HC of the Vanishing Tower was particularly bad in this respect.
