Moorcock's Elric saga, do they get better?

I don't really count the books written after the first six in the series, no matter where they are now place chronologically. I've always felt that those six should be re-edited into a single 250-300 page book; the story would be tighter, less "what the hell?" worthy, and would concentrate much more concretely on the Moorcock's central issue(s).

Like several authors out there, I think Moorcock needs someone to tell him, "Basta, already!"
