After the awe-inspiring HotU expansion and storyline, I can't wait to see more -

Don't you mean yawn-inspiring expansion and storyline? The nearly non-existent "story" came off like the worst Forgotten Realms novel ever written: Full of endless brain-dead hack-n-slash, high magic and uber-monsters with a paper-thin cliche plot wrapped around it. It was also virtually impossible to advance past certain areas (the dracolich being the one I finally gave up on and threw the game away). HotU gets my vote as worst expansion I've ever played (having skipped the previous NWN one which got horrible reviews). I got it as a birthday present and STILL felt ripped-off!!! :(

Obviously you didn't buy NWN to play online - which for me is the only point of owning the game. Been playing on a persistent world now for a few months and in some ways is better than PnP and it some ways worse.

Have they done anything with NWN with regards to the cheating?

I initially bought NWN on release day with the intent of playing online, so I was rather excited to try it out.

The first game I joined was a first-level only thing. I wandered around for awhile and killed a few kobolds, when someone else joined. I wandered over to meet this new player. As soon as I was on screen with him, he fireballed me for 999 damage. Completely underwhelmed, I quit.

Undaunted, I decided to try a high-level kill-everything-that-moves arena sort of thing. I pre-cast all of my protections (I should have been immune to everything for at least a few rounds - 20th level mage) and entered the arena. I got fireballed for 999 damage.

>Start>Programs>Neverwinter Nights>Uninstall.

Is this sort of blatant cheating/hacking still a common occurence online?

Unfortunately yes..

Cheating in an anonymous medium is inevitable regardless of safeguards anyone tries to institute.. there are always those who cheat and exploit the game.. it's a challenge for them.. and frankly is the biggest reason I play on LANs more than online.. I get tired of the 10 year old PKs.. and after the third time it happened in EQ (a game I was playing for pay) I decided online gaming is not really for me unless it is with people i can trust to behave reasonablly.. that often means I don't get to play much.

Neverwinter Nights online can be a lot of fun, if you've got the right server.
I don't know how it is in your country, but most roleplaying-centered shards in Germany require a subscription complete with character-bios (and sometimes even some sort of essay about 'good roleplaying'), which usually prevents PKs and other morons from bothering people on the shard. Most servers who don't have these requirements are so small that there's always a DM around to yellow-card or kick/ban bug-abusers, PKs, non-role-players and other people who cause trouble or disrupt the atmosphere.
Also a nice way to have fun with NWN online is to simply start your own server. Three players or so are more than enough to provide a nice party for a campaign or module, and it is a lot more fun this way than playing solo.

So - no need to uninstall NWN, just look out for a server with good admins, or find yourself players to form a persistant party for campaign play! :)

I've never encountered online NWN cheating.

Play on a server that has level enforcement of items and uses a server vault for characters instead of local (hacked) vaults. This removes all of the problems except exploiters of bugs and general idiots. Make sure this server has good admins to take care of those last two problems. A server that uses hardcore rules is good too.

More often than not, powergamers and infants stay away from servers that require such work. The server I call home, Mithral Hammer - The North is full of great roleplay and adventure.
