Why gaseous form, out of interest? The only time we've seen it used by a PC they got cut to ribbons by everyone with a magic weapon (which at 7th level was everyone)
As has been pointed out, it's really not taken for its combat utility, but rather for this line of the spell description: "[The spellcaster] can pass through small holes or narrow openings, even mere cracks". People I play with regularly use it for sneaking around and getting into places they're not supposed to be.

How about the suggested spell lists in PHB2? I think they cover all the basics pretty well.

And sleep is an excellent spell at first level. It can turn TPK encounters into a cakewalk. It's utterly useless at higher levels, though.

Gaseous Form + Invisibility = low level infiltration combo

It's not so much a combat spell as a spell that gets you into anywhere. Prepare it twice to get in, steal something, and then get out again.

God yes. Turns arcane casters into assassins. You'll need to do some information gathering first, to scout out where the target sleeps, but you can do that at night using the same combo...just carry your scythe with you, dismiss both spells, coup de grace, bing bang boom, you're out of there.
