Thats kind of a dull answer, but where fantasy allows for 'traveling companions' for a few days or weeks, Sci-Fi characters are busy, going about their professions... and if you start out without clear lines of assocation, their characters will need a reason to not head out for work the next morning.
And the overall scope I have found most enjoyable is 'the mission gone awry'.
