Most Missed Defunct Gaming Magazines?

TheAuldGrump

First Post
When I was moving a few weeks ago I ran into my seldom looked at box of Gaming magazines, and it was sad how many have gone the way of all things flesh.

Ones in particular I find myself missing:
Shadis - Where Knights of the Dinner Table first made their appearance.
White Wolf Magazine (But not Inphobia!) - It almost always had something that I could yoink.
Arcane - A very cool British gaming magazine that had a 25mm scale map in every issue (probably the one I miss most.)
White Dwarf _ I realize that there is still a magazine by that name, but the old issues where they covered everyone's games was a completely different beast.
Dungeoneer's Journal - the magazine by Judges Guild way back when.

What other magazines do people remember fondly?

Without hesitation I would say White Dwarf. The first 100 or so issues did a better job of helping me learn to look outside the TSR *"box" than anything else available at the time.

* By this I don't necessarily mean other systems as I was already playing Traveller/Runequest etc, but rather that most of the D&D specific material was VERY different in tone that what I was seeing from TSR/Dragon at the time. Specifically I meant that it helped me to look at D&D itself from a different viewpoint.

Poly

I miss Polyhedron when it was bundled with Dungeon. It's probably unrealistic, but I just loved the mini-games. Omega World was the only one I actually played & DMed, but it remains one of my favorite games. I think the publishers of Dungeon are wise to refocus on the core mission of that magazine to focus on printing D&D adventures, though.

I'd forgotten about Different Worlds, the issues were thin but each was focussed on a theme, alas none of mine survived the tide of years.

The only Dungeons I have bought in recent years were the ones with Poly mini games, none since they stopped. *sigh*

Star Wars Gamer, the first gaming magazine I actually bothered to subscribe to (instead of picking up copies at my FLGS.) It was pretty dang nice for the SWRPG, especially Issue #5. Of course, that was back when the SWRPG was actively supported :(

Dungeon/Polyhedron when they had the mini-games. I only bought them for that, and never bothered with Dungeon after they split (old 1e/2e modules for free download, free 3e modules on the WotC site, all the issues of Dungeon I picked up when it was Dungeon/Poly, and my own creativity as a DM, I'm just fine for adventures).

I miss Polyhedron when it was a monthly magazine mailed to RGPA members as part of their membership. Lots of great stuff, especially in the issues before #100.

Actually, none of the above.

There were a number of magazines I read on an occasional basis (Different Worlds most notably). The problem with them was that I was rarely interested in more than a small percentage of those magazine's contents. If they had a interesting article about a game system I was playing (Champions & Runequest, usually), I would pick it up. In general, I didn't.

If there is anything I miss it's the early feel of "The Dragon." It was focused on D&D, but occasionally had articles on other games to expose their audience to them. They had regular articles on related topics like fantasy books, book characters' D&D stats and reviews of gaming products.
