Most pleasant gaming purchase, EVER.

Usually when I order some kind of gaming item my wife is very neutral about it. Meaning I'll show it to her and she'll nod her head, maybe grunt, maybe even say a word, like "OK."

Anyways, on Cyber Monday I told her about the 50% sale offered on Kenzer's Hacklopedia of Beasts. I told my wife I decided I wasn't going to get "into" their new system (after 6 months of running a campaign, and a few more months of just playing last year and earlier this year) but that I had always been interested in this book, and I gave her my list of reasons for wanting it, especially at this sale price, so she said, "OK."

Yesterday it arrived. While I was in the shower. So my wife opens it on our bed, and starts yelling at me (because it isn't easy to hear in the shower) how nice this book is. She starts telling me about the texture, how nice the cover is, how its full color, how high the paper quality is. All things I kind of expected her to talk about, if she ever bothered, because some time in her "younger days" she worked as a book binder for a couple of years.

Then she goes on to tell me how each creature has an essay, with lots of nice information in them. I was thinking, "What? She is actually reading through it? WTH?!?" and said something like, "Yeah, I told you the fluff in this was real good. Check out how some of the entries even go into values of their hide and magical uses."

She is quiet for a couple fo minutes, then I hear, "Hey, they even have pre gens done up of things like Goblins and hob goblins and the like." Floored that the book grabbed her interest enough to read it that much, I decided to test the waters for maybe buying the upcoming Players Handbook. So I responded with, "Yeah, Kenzer puts a lot of effort into little details like that, you should see what their upcoming Players Handbook looks like."

Total silence. Oh well, it was worth testing the waters on.

A minute or so later she says, "This is a nice book, I can see why you wanted it."

"Good, I'm glad you like my purchase."

I am, too. It was a real pleasant surprise to have bought a gaming item she actually spent several minutes rattling off positive comments about it. A really pleasant change from the routine.

Still kind of wish she had shown some interest in the players book, because I would like to see the full rules to be as sure as I possibly can that I do not want to get into this system, but who knows? Maybe next Cyber Monday Kenzer will offer the PH at a severe discount and this experience will help me get my wife to say yes again.
