Mount tales

First Post
I was recently reminded of a PC's mount and his most heroic moment.

In a bad situation the hero rode his mount into a flanking position on an ogre. The ogre was on a 5 ft rise (a rock) and attacking allies of the party, he ahd taken some damage.

The hero attacked twice to no avail and then his horse attacked.

He bit the ogre to death. On the butt.

Bill.

a noble steed if there ever was one.

left behind at the entrance to an underground dwarven stronghold.
edit: you can read about him in the story hour in my sig... the early pages.

the latest mount i had got left behind when we ventured into the underdark.

Marmaduke... aka Banjo... was the former riding dog for the party that got TPK'd. i bought him cheap at the Keep on the Borderlands and trained him... a thing any hin ranger would do.

he travelled with us for a while before it was decided to venture into the Underdark.

In my game, one of the PCs (my wife's character, actually) is a mounted archery specialist. She's had the same horse throughout the campaign and the character is quite attached to it. So much so, that when she got hold of a fully combat-trained hippogriff (which I intended to allow the party some flight) she gave it away as a wedding present to the NPC who has been tagging along with the party and is marrying her cousin (another NPC).

Now that's dedication. :)

Edit: Just to clarify, the NPC is marrying the PCs cousin, not her own cousin. Ick. :)

My first PC, Ven, had a warhorse named Boros. Back in those days, there was no "party of four" garbage, and we had enough PCs to split the party into two groups, one outside with the horses, and another to go down into the dungeon. Boros survived many years, as Ven rose through twentieth (AD&D) level, and eventually went south to establish his own kingdom with some of the PCs from his early adventuring years. If he still survives, all these years later, I'm sure old Boros has a whole herd of great-great-grand-horses, and was put out to stud and a life of ease, long ago... Or maybe not. Ven did have the Chalice of Life, so maybe Boros still goes to war. I haven't seen them since Ven hit 33rd level.

My current PC, Eredave, has had a strange life. His light warhorse, Arrohir, was either gained at first level as transport for Eredave's group of volunteers for a city under seige, and then later trained up from just a riding horse to a warhorse, or was acquired when the first mount was traded in at second level... Anyway, he has been with Eredave as he has been pulleds from world to world, cursed by a goddess, escaped, and now picked up and swooped off to The Forge by one of The Feathered Flock... During the "cursed and unable to leave this bubble" period, Eredave gained his first spell. This was Speak With Animals, and he went out to the stables to talk to Arrohir, and ask if he wanted to become his Animal Companion. The horse agreed, and so it is. Currently, Eredave is searching for a Druid who can Awaken Arrohir. Unfortunately, 3.5e says that he needs the Leadership Feat to do that, so the GM hasn't allowed him to find one capable of casting the spell. They've discussed the possibility, though, and Arrohir has agreed to that, too (although Eredave isn't so sure that he understands the burden of intelligence).

Although I've mentioned it once or twice...

I've never told how the tale ended.

Had a Player whose Paladin got high enough level to have a Special Mount (back in 2nd ed days). The DM took the party to a special horse farm financed by the Paladin's Temple. (The horses there were basically Celestial Warhorses before 'Celestial' had a definition).

Well, somwhere, the Paladin's Player had heard that the best Horses were Geldings, so he wanted his Paladin to have a Gelding. He thought it was a specific Horse Breed or Type, like a Palimino or a Cyldesdale. And being the cheap gamers we are, the rest of the party was not about to buy him a clue.

So he goes up to this farmer, wh relies on the temple for 90% of his cash flow & begins asking to see all his best horses. Finds several he likes, asks if any are Geldings.

"NO SIR! All our horse flesh is the very best! Sir."

"But I really wanted a Gelding. Like this magnificant beast over here. IF he was a Gelding I'd take him. Maybe I'll just tell the temple you don't have what I want and..."

"NO! Sir, wait just a moment! I have a, ummm, horse just like him in the stables. BUT; THat one is a gelding! We just got him in last night. I forgot all about him. Why don't I just take this stallion back into the barn & I'll bring the Gelding out for you to have a look at? OK?"

"Hmmmm. That Sounds good, but make it quick!"

"Yes sir! Come along now, into the barn with you. Now where did I put my sheers?"

"MYYHHHRUUHHGGGGGGG!!!!!!"

"Man, that horse sounds like some sort of demon! It'll really put the fear of my god into my enemies!"

"He's Tormented all Right"

Farmer comes back with horse that's a little bit wobbly.

"There you go sir, One Grand Gelding!"

I'll skip all the fun that came later. But, suffice to say, I'm pretty sure the Paladin's Action led to the mysterious villian known only as 'The Castrator' that began to trouble the towns we visited. I also think this is the first case of a Paladin being defeated in battle when his mount kicked him in the groin (It claimed it rolled a 1). I won't mention what happened to the Farmer after the Mount abandoned the Paladin and ran away. But, it it looks like a carrot....

Then the kicker was when we faced the Big Evil Arch-Villian Anti-Paladin & You Know Who shows up as the villian's mount.

Seems cutting a horse's bushels off negates the 'Special Paladin Bond'
