Mounted Combat

First Post
Hi Guys,
I was just looking for some clairifications on mounted combat.

1. A character is riding a mount w/ movement 40. He rides 35 feet (7 squares.) Can that character then take a full attack action, or just a single attack?

2. Same situation, but the mount moves 45 feet (9 squares.)

3. On a mounted charge, can both the mount and the character make an attack?

Thanks in advance.

In either case, 1 attack. In either case, you also get a move action (draw a weapon, or whatever) as well as your attack. The mount could also attack in situation 1, but not situation 2.

3. On a mounted charge, can both the mount and the character make an attack?

Yes. No move action for the rider, unlike the above. The rider also suffers the normal charge penalties.

So you can take a move action while said horse is moving, then a standard action when it gets to its destination? Even when the horse takes a double move or run?

What about ranged attacks? Can a mounted character take a full attack action with those?

Am I asking stupid questions that could be answered with a single page number?

Edit: clairified terminology

It has to do with the way Readying an Action works in 3.5. You can take a move action, then use your standard action to ready an attack for when you get in range. In 3e, it wasn't quite like this, it was a full-round action to ready a single attack.

Both the horse and the rider get their regular round of actions, basically. They act at the same time.

Mmm, answer unclear, shake 8-ball again.

I would say, yes. You don't have to wait to get in range, so you can full attack with your bow while the horse goes about its business. You get penalties to attack if the horse moves in the same round you shoot, though. But that's a guess.

Read this thread, too.

Mounted Combat in the PHB as given by youspoonybard explains rather nicely that you can make one melee attack but a full ranged attack action while mounted.

You can, indeed, make a full attack with ranged weapons while mounted. There's a hefty penalty for attempting this.

Now you know why a drive-by shooting involves the vehicle STOPPING before the gunmen open fire.

Yeah, they didn't take the Mounted Archery feat.

Readying has always been a standard action.

Yeah, though we played it a long time as FRA too. Otherwise these "I move to the next corner there and ready a partial charge at any enemy I see then" were simply too easy cheats to get around the charge description :D
