Mounted combat?

Vargo

First Post
I must be blind - I was going over the 3.5 edition PHB today, and did not find anything to specify how mounted combat works.

More specifically, I've got a player with a lance, on his heavy warhorse. I'm guessing, based on logical deduction, that the player has a 10'x10' face, and then a reach of 10', leaving the 5' ring around his face not threatened. Correct?

Thanks,
Me

Yup.

The nice thing is, the MOUNT threatens the squares right about it...

And if you are a good rider you can make your horse attack that silly little goblin next to it while you lance the big bad guy in-front. I loved the look on my group's face when they first saw a fighter with lots of mounted combat related feats =).

Attack the mount! Attack the mount!

That's what Mounted Combat is for. Negate the attack! Negate the attack! Of course, they should have made an Improved Mounted Combat feat that would let you negate more than 1 - maybe like Combat Reflexes...

I play a paladin with a Griffon mount and they are definitely the weak link in the whole mounted combat. A griffon is pretty superior to a horse in all measurable ways and I still spend a lot of time keeping him safe. It get more ridiculous at the really high levels as mounts just dont keep up with the PC or the monsters. Sure you've got a 20th level mounted warrior, but his 30hp horse aint gonna last long against much.

Complete Warrior has some extra stuff for mounted combat. A couple of very useful feats (Cavalry Charger, Shock Trooper), a PRC (Cavalier which now improves your mount hit dice), and jousting rules.

Shock Trooper is a going to be a MUST feat for every high level mounted knight.
