Mounts and mounted combat

In the PH on page 138 it says that if your mount moves more than 5ft then you can only take a partial action.

Is this saying that if my character is riding a mount and it moves more than 5ft then my character only gets one attack? The mount gets one attack too?

OR

Can my mount move and when I reach my target I can take a full round action or a standard action?

Yes. You and your mount share the round (sort of).

NAFAIK.

No and not exactly. The text doesn't say you get a partial action. It says you get a partial melee attack, though the wording could have been better. Essentially you simply get one attack.

There are feats that give you more options though (such as Ride-By Attack).

another thing to consider.

training for the mount.

a light horse cannot attack while carrying a rider.

a light warhorse can.

Yes, I know about the ride skill how it works.

I was watching a DnD game the other night and saw this:

A mounted character did a double move using the mount. When the mount and character reached a target the character using a reach weapon did a full round action which was 2 attacks and then took a 5ft step "on" the mount (as the mount is long.) All in the same round.

I found this very strange..

AFAIK, everything but the 5-foot step "on the mount" is fine, provided that he succeeded in guiding his mount with his knees (which lets you have your full-round).

I'll just add that you can get a full round attack with a ranged weapon, but you take penalties for that depending on how fast the horse is moving.

"Guide with knees" simply lets you use both hands, not get a full round of attacks.

No skill or feat in the core books lets you get a full round of melee attacks, as far as I know. I wish!! (Unless, of course, you only get 1 attack in your round anyway, is which case you got your "fulll round :))

You can, however, get more than one arrow shot. but I don't recall right off the top of my head if that's core or not, and exactly how you pull that off.
