Mourn with me

That's why I lacked some sympathy for the Westwood Game Store going out of business. Excluding chain stores (and there are 5 Game Keepers and 2 WOTC stores in range), within a 10 mile radius of Westwood you have these stores selling D&D products:

Acta Game Guys
All Star Baseball Card Store
Collector's Paradise
gamesandcards.com
Kings Comics & Cards
Kings II 1604
Last Grenadier
Last Grenadier (second location)
Legacy Comic And Cards
Santa Monica Sportscards & Collectables
Card sharks
Curious Comics
Games Hall Of Fame
Northridge Sports Collectibles
Puzzle Zoo
The Weekend Warrior

And that isn't even all of them, just those who found their way to the Wizards retail store locator. Los Angeles just doesn't lack for game stores (in fact, it doesn't even lack for GOOD game stores either).

It is sad but perhaps solemnity is not the best way to do honor to the passing....

I did. he had a 40% sale on Saturday, and me an my gaming group was there when he opened. I spent $150, and the rest spent about $50 a person.

TalonComics:
Did he say why he was closing?

Not enough business. He said he only profited about $15,000 last year- notnearly enough to convince him to stay open

And I think he wants to go back to school- he dropped out to open the store 15 years ago...G'Bless him

Mistwell:
Yeah, you will have to drive a whole 7 more minutes out of your way to hit the next game store...WOTC in the Beverly Center is a good one.
Actually, the wizards store there decided that their fanatsy stuff wasnt selling- so they are not carrying that anymore. Now, they only have tech and futuristic stuff- i dropped by there to pick up a lot of sale minis after they liquidated that too...

The Crimster:
Ugh. That leaves you with Aero Hobbies, owned by the crankiest and least helpful game owner I've ever known.
Yeah- I stopped by theer to pick up a Warhammer mini that I wanted and Games of Westwood did not. An dhe was no help finding it- and that the store was a mess- boxes strewn all over the ground, and broken and old and ...

Oh well- I dont like shopping there and wont. besides I shop at the Games because of the owner- he is nice and talks to me about stuff.

plus, I go to school at UCLA, just a minute away from his store, so on days when I have gaps in bewteen classes, I stop by his place to pick up something- and sometiems he invites me to play a board game wit him. He was nice- i hate to see him leave...

At least some of you HAVE local gaming shops. I have a comic book store I've been buying from for the past ... <thinks> 15 years. Wow. I was only 12... Anyway, while he can order the gaming stuff I want, it's not profitable for him if he only orders one copy of something... so it's just easier to order from Talon, and cheaper too.

Umm, you're wrong. The WOTC store still sells fantasy (I was just there). They are just dumping their overstock right now, same as every other WOTC store (and same thing they, along with GameKeeper, always seem to do around this time of the year). They still will continue to support all the same fantasy stuff they always supported, they just are dumping the overstock left over still from Christmas.

Joining the funeral procession

it is sad, indeed, when a gaming store closes. Within the last year or so, I've had two close that I stopped at periodically. That only leaves 5 within easy striking distance. And I buy stuff from each one to do my part!
