Move Silently Question

This question came up last night in our game. Can you move silently at half speed twice in one round using a double move and still be considered to be moving at half speed.

Sounds to me like two halves make a whole, but I understand the counter argument. We decided to let it ride to avoid the converstaion, but I'd like to know the answer for the future.

Don't know if this is the rule but I always played it as even if you move a double but are doing it at half speed it's still half speed, ie.. rogue has normal speed of 30, half speed would be 15 but can move 30 as a double and still move silently.

Er, I've always ruled no. But I'm mean.

I think there are different mods for moving half your speed, your normal speed, and faster than normal already, right? Seems to me that since a double move is "hustling" that you shouldn't be able to do this. I'm not sure whether there's an official ruling, though.

when a character moves at full speed, lets assume 30'. He can double move in a round giving him effectivly 60' in a round.

This happens because of the way that rounds are broken down in 3e. You can move and take and action, that action can be another round meaning that each of these takes 3 of the 6 seconds.

Let's break this down on a second by second basis. The character can move 10'/second. If they wish to move silently they can only move 5'/second. This means that how far the character can move and still be considered to be half moving is a function of time and not distance. If they spend three seconds moving they get 15' on a half move. If they spend the full six seconds moving they get 30' on a half move.

Does that help?

The way I see it... you move silently at half-speed for the movement portion of your round. Then you move silently at half-speed again for the action portion of your round.

I don't see anything wrong with allowing that.

I'm with AntiK -- If you'd allow someone to move silently to sneak up on someone (at 1/2 their speed), then get an attack in that same round, then you should allow them to change that action into another move.

I was going to say I would implement a bonus to someones listen check, but this makes perfect sense.

I agree. Someone executing a double move isn't really moving faster per second than someone who takes a normal move and an action - they're spending more time moving, that's all.

Hence the penalty to moving silently if you're running...

Well said.
