Move Silently while Tumbling?

YAY NINJA MOVIES!

Seriously, if a character had 5 ranks (not total) in Tumble and Move Silent I would not impose a penalty OTHER then the distance covered penalty.

Otherwise I would proabbly tack a +2 to +8 penalty, more depending on surface of the tumble...soft earth to steel plated floor.

Hope that helps.

I know D&D ain't real life, but the first thing we learn in aikijutsu was how to roll and tumble so we don't get hurt when thrown. When we do it we are almost silent. If anything I think Tumbling would give a BONUS to Move Silently.

Having had a similar experience myself, I'm inclined to agree. My vote goes to no extra penalty. In fact I might be inclined to give a +2 synergy bonus to MS for having 5 ranks in Tumble, if tumble weren't already such a useful skill.

Well, sure... But you guys also weren't wearing leather armor with metal studs in it, or carrying metal weapons, right?

Nope. And had I been wearing studded leather it would have been more difficult. Which is reflected by the fact that studded leather has an armor check penalty. As far as metal weapons are concerned, I think that's covered under knowing how to pack and carry your gear. If you really wanted to worry about that sort of thing, I'd say the belt pouch with all the character's money in it would be far more problematic than a sword in a scabbard.

Not if you're wearing masterwork studded leather, which is apparently studded with metal that doesn't clink ;)

Just playing devil's advocate, though, as you can see if you look at one of my earlier replies.

Also, its likely that studded leather is not the only thing a character is wearing. A cloak for example could be positioned so that it is between the character and whatever they are rolling across, to keep the studs from clicking against the surface.

Although as someone who has spent years wearing a trenchcoat regularly, you'd have to be pretty smooth to keep something like a cloak from being more trouble than its worth, jumping and rolling around like that. ;)

My understanding is that the unarmed aikijutsu almost perfectly mimics the armed kenjutsu. The moves and rolls are identical. I also understand that both were practiced in full armor. While japanese armor was not as confining as western, it was still pretty tight.

Either way, thats what Armor Check Penalty is for.

Now to my next question. The rules say that you can move silently as a part of "normal" movement. Is tumbling considered "normal" movement?

If it's not, then you can't tumble and move silently, you must choose one. Thoughts on this interpretation?
