Moving. Delaware gamers?

Hi everyone - there's a very good possibility that we'll be moving to Dover, Delaware next year. I was just wondering if there was anyone from that general area frequenting the boards.

Well, I am originally from NJ. I can say DE is nice. MUCH cheaper than Redwood City, CA. The weather is pretty decent from an East Coast perpective, but you might have to shovel snow once or twice a winter. The Beaches are great, and NO SALES TAX!!! The only time it isn't pleasant is during NASCAR Siege weekend! :D

As far as players, I have always found players around military bases. You might have some luck with Dover AFB.

Thanks, WSmith. Yea hthe cost of living there is one of the factors which has moved the job in question onto my wife's short list. As for weather, I grew up in central Massachusetts, so snow once or twice a year is no problem :) I also hadn't thought about the possibility of finding players around the air force base - good idea.

Anyone else have any thoughts on the area?

hey, another bay area exile!

i used to live in San Francisco, but i'm in south jersey now. i think dover's a bit too far south from me though, or i'd consider offering you a spot in my group.

It's the thought that counts, bwgwl :)

My wife and I have now lived in Boston (college), Manhattan (her med school), and the Bay Area (residency). Time to try a place that's a bit more reasonable.

Well, all of my gaming experience is from New Castle County, but Delaware is a small state.

I have no idea about gaming groups in the Dover area, although the Dover Air Force base does seem a good option. If you are willing to travel a little bit, the Wilmington/Newark areas have a lot of gamers. It's probably slightly less than an hour's drive from Dover.

As for gaming stores and resources, there aren't a lot downstate. I believe the only significant resource in the Dover area is a comic book store, Superior Comics. I have never been there, so I can't speak of them specifically. Be glad you didn't move to Sussex county where there doesn't seem to be any major stores.

In New Castle County, there are two main stores: the Days of Knights in Newark & Between Books just north of Wilmington proper. I'm friends with both of the owners, so certainly recommend both.

The Days of Knights is mostly devoted to gaming & gift type items (Enchantica Dragons, swords & daggers and such). If you are looking for something in print it may be your best chance. If you can't find something, ask. John (the manager/co-owner) apparently has a lot of out-of-print stuff stored away, although I don't know what his policy is on dipping into it. They also have a games club that is behind the store. There is a lot of room to game there, although it may be full certain nights of the week. If you are looking for miniatures, that's the place to go.

Between Books is a combination store. It's a comic book/book/gaming store. They have the best science fiction/fantasy section I have ever seen in a single store. The gaming section takes up 4 or 5 shelves of product (with a separate one for miniatures & a case of dice/painted miniatures, etc). However, it is all bookended and sorted by publisher. You may have to search through a lot of stuff, but there are a lot of great finds. Much of it is out-of-print. Greg also doesn't believe in marking stuff up. All of his out-of-print comics & gaming stuff is cover price. There is a back table or two in the rear of the store for gaming. I'm not sure what his policy is on using it though.

If you have any questions, feel free to email me.

I second this store. I live in NJ but Iused to drive down there to trade/sell stuff. I found the owner was a fair man. I remember him having alot of WAR game stuff if you are interested in that stuff.

Also, it is right by the University. I don't know if you want to play with 20ish kids but there has to be a decent sized group off them.

Good luck.

There are right now two main owners/managers of DOK's. John has been with it from the beginning, he's the roleplayer. Frank got involved later, he's the wargamer. There tends to be a lot of mix and match involved there. Right now I've been playing a lot of Mage Knight there.

While I haven't played anything at the club in a while (our group preferring to game at home), I know there is a reasonable mix of players you can meet or find out about at the store.

It's been in business since 1981 and many of the originals still lurk about (including myself). There is a large group of college kids that come in & out. There also is a group of younger kids who meet for MTG and similiar games. I know there is a contingent of Games Workshop miniature gamers that play there on some sort of a regular basis, too.

Chatting with many of the clerks is the best way to get a line on games. I myself have had a couple of them putting out feelers for a player for my RttToEE campaign (two of them playing in it means they'll make sure not to pick someone that's likely to annoy us). I'm pretty certain I'm not the only one. Plus there are regular games of various sorts at the club, especially during the summer.
