he encoded the CD audio into WMA files, there was no issue ripping the CD, he just wanted to have MP3s, not WMAs.

He didn't say that he encoded them; he said that he took them off the CD.

There are a few CDs out there that are copy-protected against CD-ROMs--the audio tracks won't play. To keep complaints down, the record companies that do this often include a data trac that has the whole album as a DRM-friendly audio format, such as WMA.
