MUD based magic system

Im sure some of you have played MUDs before. I was wondering if anyone has tried using a magic system based on how they are set up in MUDs.

basically the way it would work is rather than spell levels, spells would have a MP cost to cast. Each level a spellcaster would gain MP just like HP, d?+(abilitiy mod).
Would that end up too much for the players to keep track of?
