multi-classing from day 1

Lee's Fortune

First Post
Hi all,

I am a newbie to the fullest degree when it comes to experience with 3.5, even though I've been playing for awhile. In my group, we focus more on fun and less on rules, so if a rule gets in the way, we toss in on the spot, and our group has never had more than a VERY mild discussion on rules interpretations anyway. Great group, btw :).

Having said that, why can't I find the ruling behind how you start a 1st level class in BOTH classes when multi-classing? I recall rules in the past that allowed for being 1/2 level in each class, at first level. Do those exist in 3.5? And if not, how do you handle a multi-class character at first level? Can there even be such a thing in 3.5?

The 3.0 DMG had rules for apprentice levels, IIRC (where you started a character with two classes, but with only partial benefits for each). The 3.5 DMG doesn't have them.

I see how that works, and have done this in the past.

But soon we will be starting a new campaign, and I've decided to try a multi rogue/wizard. (For reference, we use MOSTLY the core III, which might help explain a few things about selections on my part.)

How would a 1st level rogue go about learning what it is a wizard does, and vice versa? I am assuming that at this point, it's up to the player and dm to figure out how, via role playing.

So I guess my real question is, is it no longer possible to multi-class right at first level, avoiding the need to later find a mentor? Pardon my scattered brain today! (really) Does this mean if I can't find a mentor for either rogue or wizard goodies, I'm doomed?

Hey guys, no soul selling on public forums :D

It's not possible by the rules anymore, but it's not too bad to use the 3.0 rules for apprentice levels...

In this case, you better start with a rogue level, push the sneak attack to level 2 (which you take as wizard) and take half of the wizards spells/day with full spells known.

Not game breaking and you can put the whole reasoning why you are a rog/wiz into your background story.

Well, I was thinking of taking wizard first, and having him learn some of the rogue goodies (sneak attack, stealth, etc.) along the way.

but..........that...........really.................depends........on.......whhhaaat...mymastertellsme!
