Seriously, about the dwarf gorillon: you can use Savage Species to engineer a young, medium-sized gorillon pretty easily.
A fun thing to do is to throw weaker versions of tough monsters at the pcs, so they think it's even worse than it is. I used a venerable ogre a while back, f'rinstance.
