Multiple GCs?

Do you think that Nintendo will be able to capture and hold onto the idea of being able to buy ethernet adapters to link multiple GCs together to play more than 4 MP on separate TVs, not unlike X-Box's capabilities?

Dreamcast was the first system to offer this.

It didn't go over for three reasons.

1) The games were not optimized for lan play. So you often experienced lag and dropped frames.

2) The connection was only 10 baseT which sucks ass and you could not do a 100 baseT connection with it.

3) You had to buy their lan card which cost $100.00. Any true geek knows that a lan card only costs $10.00. Sure you could get $20 or $25 for a special one for the system but not $100.00.

If Nintendo can overcome those problems, as the x has, then I'd say they can pull it off.

I'm thinking no. Internet play is what matters these days, and Nintendo is dragging their feet in that department.

It will also depend on the games. Mario Kart and Kirby Air Ride aren't going to cut it for me. They'll need a real killer app to get me to shell out for a broadband adapter. Animal Crossing 2 could be that killer app, if they include some type of internet play.

well, I really don't care much for the internet idea if you have to pay for it separately, but if you could just hook it up to an existing ethernet connection, then I'd go for it.

Anyway, I like the possibility of ethernet connections, but I agree with Drawmack. Price and games being optimized are good points. I hate lag.

I know MK:DD, Kirby's Air Ride, Crash Nitro Kart, and Custom Robo will all feature LAN play. Supposedly Nintendo is going to try to focus a lot more on LAN play in 2004. Also the Big N has an agreement with Gamespy for online middleware, though the details are a bit vague. Tunneling software is also now in the works via resourceful users (that probably want to play MK:DD online).

Personally, I like LAN play since it's free. Online play is cool, too, but I'd rather not have to pay for it. I'm already paying 40 bucks a month for broadband access, so having to pay money to play on top of that (when almost all online PC games are free, save for MMORPGS) is not enticing in the least.

I completely agree that internet play should be free. I just don't see myself lugging my Gamecube over to a friend's house to play LAN games. Give me internet so I can play from the comfort of my home.

I'm sure that the open source community (i.e. Warp Pipe Project) will develop tunneling software in short order, enabling LAN play over the net for free.

I would lug around my GC, but trying to find the TVs is a bother, but if there's a good enough game that will incorporate all the components here, I'd go for it.
