Munchkin bashing [rant]

How many D-Cells does a Power Gamer Need?

I really dont see a difference between role-players and roll-players except in extream situations. I DM for a guy who is playing a dwarven cleric of the earth god, and being only 2nd level has a +13 on all craft attempts. He role-plays his character well and I have no problem with his "higher than average" crafting ability as he fully explained it.

A roll-player has fun by having a character that can go toe to toe with a iron golum wielding a toothpick. A role-player, as I have found, will go toe to toe with a golum using whatever means are available; be it magic, force, divine intervention, whatever. A roll-player role-plays through his characters poweress. I can not honestly see a person turning down a good set of stats for the sake of role-playing.

I see the fued between Power Gamers and Role Players as blown out of proportion. I love to play characters with great strength, dex, int, con and then wimp out on wisdom and charisma. I may not see the enemy coming, but I can deal with it when it attacks. If a character wants a +50 flaming- vorpol-holy-brilliant enegy axe...alright, just tell me who's gonna make it and what kingdom are you gonna sell to get it. Your the DM, you can wave your fingers and BOMB...a character dies or is brought back from the brink of death. Deal with it. There are those who enjoy the "sport" of gaming, how they do it is up to them.

Keep your players poor & hungry, that's what I say.
Interesting idea - I think I'll cut down on the snacks in my next game! :D
And keeping them poor isn't too much of a problem, either; most of my players are busily spending all the money they can get their hands on anyway... ;)

Still, are you sure that they can role-play well if they're hungry...? :p

Nothing against Australia (mate), it's just Australians that I have a problem with.

You people are rude, agressive and self-obsessed.

I guess that's what comes from being descended from convicts...

Ok, you have a major problem (racism). Get lost , mate.

"Ok, you have a major problem (racism). Get lost , mate."

I don't know if I'd call his statement "racism." Convicts don't constitute a "race."

I think his remark reveals his ignorence, notice he's from Stockholm.

Personally, I'm more offended at the idea that australians are regarded as "rude, agressive and self-obsessed."

That is how AMERICANS are supposed to be stero-typed! What's going on here? Are the Australians giving us a run for the championship of rudness, self-absorbtion and agression?

Looks like I'll have to go smack some Europeans around to shore up our good ol' reputation! Just let me watch my shows first....

BTW, I agree that munchkin bashing is out of hand. I wrote a rant in another thread last week about how people who call other people munchkins are shallow, sissy gamers who like to belittle other people in an effort to inflate their own egos.

Unless you ENJOY rolling up a new charcter every week, you have no business calling someone else a "munchkin."

I only skimmed this thread, but I noticed at least one person talknig about how characters that hve maxed out skills are "munchkin." I disagree. That's what the system is about. Max ranks in Hide + cloak of elven kind + elf dex bonus + bracers of Dex is NOT a "munchkin" way to play. Its the way the game was intended to be played in the first place.

To everyone still debating Snoweel, Australia, etc.: Please read Nemmerle's post in this thread that's addressing - and ending - this issue. Thanks!

It's been a long time, but I still remember the first time I was kicked out of a group for being too munchkin. I was playing a knight in 2e and I had bought armor unlike most of the people in the group. So of course since I had splint mail I was much harder to hit. The other players didn't appreciate that one bit. :p So they convinced the dm that I was ruining the balance of the game and got me tossed out.

Darkness,

One might also note that Snoweel is from Australia. He just lives in Sweden now.

Now, from the pro-Munchkin crowd we have this:

Its the way the game was intended to be played in the first place.

This is as silly a comment as what you were railing against.

The game is not intended to be played in any particular way. The game is meant to be played in whatever way the DM and players in conjunction decide to play.

I'll go with the group that is arguing that the problem is when one player (or a small minority) in the group is going whole-hog munchkin and the rest of the group is going mainstream-powergaming and the DM is playing toward the mainstream-powergaming crowd. When the DM has to spend a disproportionate amount of time reining the munchkin back to the rest of the group, there's a problem.

Again, the game is not intended to be played in any one particular way.
