[Music] Spycraft Soundtrack

I'd add 'Pistolero' by Juno Reactor -- it's a little more Ennio Morriconish, but I think it still works with the Spycraft genre. I burned a 2 CD set working with 6 different remixes of the song, alternating with 'Ring of Fire', (the original followed by the Wall of Voodoo versioni, followed by the Misfits version) the different Moriconne 'man with no name themes', on the first CD, then using the Clash--Sandanista, Big Audio Dynamite and Warren Zevon's 'Roland the Headless Thompson Gunner' and then ending with some stuff from Tarentino--the whole thing was an aural exploration of the 'hired gun' myth from the westerns up through mercenaries. Stuff kept echoing back and forth--for example, I used Dick Dale doing the theme from Pulp Fiction on the first CD and then had Los Lobos doing Desperado on the second. Gee I got off on a tangent ...but yeah, definitely Pistolero ...

It is my hope that hiring David Fincher for Mission: Impossible 3 indicates a turn away from the John Woo predecessor (a movie so bad Anthony Hopkins didn't want his name on it).

M:I2 was greatness. The first M:I movie was good until the helicopter-in-the-tunnel sequence, then it sucked.

How about the good ol' Ocean's Eleven Soundtrack (modern version)? It's got a good bass line and a little bass cello action. Seems like it would make a better background for those moments in which few bullets were flying through the air.

Re: Ocean's Eleven

Yeah, Ocean's Eleven is good for suave maneuverings. That's the aforementioned David Holmes for you. His own albums are something of the same thing, but with more variety. Holmes also did Out of Sight which has a great vibe, but isn't quite in the spy family.

If you like that energy and aren't afraid to stray from the spy traditions, be sure to check out the Snatch soundtrack, too. It's not all the right vibe, but there's some great stuff on there. One of which, for a sort of surreal, postmodern tension is "Angel" by Massive Attack.

That song also appears on the Pi soundtrack, which has a lot of great sounds from the era when techno became electronica. That whole album's sort of oddly uncomfortable, great if you like to play up a world of facades and secrets in your Spycraft game. Clint Mansell's work on the score for that picture is great for any techology-influenced spy game.

Will

I'll also recommend the Pi Soundtrack - there is some fantastic music on it: Orbital, Aphex Twin, Massive Attack, Roni Size, Gus Gus and best of all, Clint Mansell. Clint also did the soundtrack to "Requiem for a Dream", which I think is sufficiently sppoky and nerve-jangling for a fantastic Spycraft game.

Other stuff to look into:

Propellorheads - especially Spybreak! (from the Matrix Soundtrack, also on decksanddrumsandrockandroll), On Her Majesty's Secret Service (a remix of the James Bond Theme on the same album) and Crash! (on the Extended play EP). The rest of their stuff is good too.

Pulp - You might think this is surprising, but just listen to the title track from This Is Hardcore. Should be a James Bond song. Awesome track.

Moby - look for his soundtrack work.

Rammstein - German industrial metal. Nobody understands the words, but the sound is just perfect for a really gritty feel.

Portishead, Def FX, the Prodigy, Radiohead, Rollerball

Play some InSurge to get a bit political.

Fantomas.

Soundtrack to Plunkett & Macleane. Electronic music for a film set in the 1800s. Just awesome. See the film.

Tool - any of their albums, but I found a string tribute that is just right (Tool songs set arranged for a string quartet - bliss!)

As always - classical music and soundtracks. Find movies that have the feel that you want, and borrow their soundtracks. The Shadowforce Archer book has a list of useful music that you might want to check out.

From your original post, it looks like you're looking more for mix-cd material than session soundtracks. So here goes:

R.E.M. - It's the End of the World
Corey Hart - Sunglasses at Night
Nick Cave - Red Right Hand
Nick Cave - The Sly Persuaders
Tom Waits - Black Wings
The Police - Every Breath You Take
The Sisters of Mercy - When You Don't See Me
The Sisters of Mercy - Mother Russia

Spider

Good stuff. I have some spy-related maneuverings in my D20Modern game coming up, so I think i'll steal some of these suggestions.

I'm personally very partial to the _Goldeneye_ soundtrack. The theme song from the credits is great, but it's got a wide variety of instrumental mood pieces that would work for infiltration and combat.
