must-have XBOX / 360 games ?

So I'm getting an XBOX 360 for the holidays. Yeah, I know, I'm years behind the times.

What are some of the XBOX / 360 must-have games?

Ones I already know about and plan to obtain:
* Halo & Halo 2
* Knights of the Old Republic 1 & 2
* Ninja Gaiden
* Perfect Dark Zero [not everyone likes this, but I adored the original and want to own this]
* Brothers in Arms

As you can see, I'm primarily a player of CRPGs or shooters. Not really into sports games.

What else should I get?

- Gears of War (360) is out this week, and is the first real "must-have" game (though it has yet to be reviewed).
- If you like GTA-style games, Saint's Row (360) is considered to be decent.
- Enchanted Arms (360) - a full-scale traditional JRPG (first ever for any Xbox!) that is reasonably good.

If you like CRPGs, the Xbox isn't for you... ;)

The Xbox didn't have a lot of RPGs (other than KOTORs, Fable, and Jade Empire, the last two which I didn't like) and I'm not sure many of the shooters hold up to 360 standards.

You might try D&D Heroes for the Xbox. It's an action RPG, kinda like the Dark Alliance games, but with much better graphcis (It's an Xbox exclusive). Dunno if it works on the 360, though.

I guess I am using CRPG in a very broad sense of, "involves D&D-like elements of character advancement". So I would consider Oblivion a CRPG, as well as Jade Empire and its ilk.

On another tangent, how about the Star Wars: Battlefront games -- are those worth owning?

Nah, you are about right. The Xbox was popular but the 360 is still pretty new. This is a great time to get one. :)

Ah, then consider Phantasy Star Universe. That is, if you want to want to play an online game that you don't have to play all the time. It does have a monthly fee, tho. It does have an offline, one-player mode that I haven't played yet but I've heard that it feels tacked-on. I will also admit to being a huge Phantasy Star fan. The best thing about the game is that is it huge and there is plenty of leveling and character building to do.

All that said - it is not a must have on the level of Oblivion, Halo (1&2) or KotOR (1&2).

I'll also add Dead Rising to the list. It's a very fun game. There are RPG elements if you want them and killing zombies is flat-out fun. The save system is stinky, but it really one of the only bad things about it.

The old XBox games I keep comming back to are the Halo's and Star Wars Battlefront I & II. The sequel is definitely better. I really liked Fable too - it took a while to get into and its definitely not a gore fest but its fun. Heroes is very good as are the ones set in Baldurs Gate. I thought that the LOTR's 1 & 2 were a bit naff. The third one was better but got real monotonous after a while - once you learn how to totally thrash the AI. A lot of people liked Half Life but I didnt get that one as it just didnt appeal. X-Men is worth looking at too. But nothing tops Halo 2. I'll look at getting a 360 when there is a Halo 3.

Oblivion is really better on the PC, if yours can run it, as you can use user made stuff (which really helps the game, IMHO).

I don't have it for the Xbox, but I really have enjoyed Star Wars: Battlefront 2 on the PSP. So probably worth a try.
