A thought:

What if it’s not REAL wars? What if Trial By Combat has been resurrected for civil & criminal trials. The legal arguments before the Courts affect the capabilities of the mecha you get in the arena. Major trials are broadly televised, maybe even PPV. Minor trials are on local civic access channels.

You can represent yourself, but in civil trials, Champions* are almost always chosen instead. The mecha used are of 2 kinds: live piloted or remote controlled, each with advantages and disadvantages.

Criminal trials are different. The defendant is always piloting the mech when all the legal maneuvering is done. Court Champions usually use RC mechs, but some prefer a more hands-on approach.
