My 3,000th Post -- Some Thoughts on EN World

You could always go to GenCon. It's only 180 miles from your listed location. :D

I'm scheming on a way for my wife and I to go next year.

Unfortunately, my finaces are tight this year. However, I hope to make it next year. I have met many of the local EN Worlds at the Chicago EN World Gamedays. (Gamedays are a great way to meet people, and tryout new games. So, perhaps you and the wife can go to one in your area -- or organizae one.)

Great idea. Not sure how many people would want to come to Omaha, Nebraska though. ;)

Well, you could start a thread to see if there is interest in Omaha and the surrounding states. Maybe call it THE GREAT PLANES EN WORLD GAMEDAY (pun intended). Sometimes, seeing if there is interest might be enough to get the ball rolling. There are some people on the boards to give you some advice on getting the process started.

Very cool.

In my 3,000+ posts here, I went form being an old Grognard (I ran mostly CyberPunk and Vampire, hated 2nd edition, and still had my old homebrew campaign running using a heavily house ruled version of the Basic / Expert rules set) to a d20 convert.

I posted some character classes to the conversion forum, and had a few in the downloads section, and then, after Russ took over, finally took the big step and released a PDF of prestige classes that jumped to the #1 position at RPGnow (January 5, 2002).

Since then I've gotten into battles (big and small) and hung out in the publisher forum a lot, and have played a variety of d20 games and variants. I've been mentioned by some industry giants as one of the most helpful publishers to talk to if you are new to the hobby (which was quite the ego boost) and then won an ENnie award the same year that I released my first product, which was QUITE a blast.

Whenever my obsession with d20 waned (such as when I relaunched our old Vampire campaign, and my CyberPunk games), I always had ENWorld to keep me going strong, and to bounce ideas off of when I couldn't actually run thrm through my house gaming group. On top of that, my shopping list has always been VERY MUCH influenced by the reviews section here. I decide what I have to buy and what I'll skip based on what I read in the reviews and on the forums. With very few disappointments, I might add.

I've made a lot of friends here too, and am really glad to be able to call a bunch of you my friends instead of 'on-line acquaintances'.

I've also gotten a lot closer to the site through my business partnership with Russ. E.N.Publishing has really flourished, IMO, with the help, contributions, writing and art from the members of these forums. It is great to be part of a community like this.

Thanks E.N. World. You've made my decade.

I think it is one thing to argue passionately on a position, but another to view the person you disagree with as an enemy.

Would you mind explaining that to my mother in law next time you're in town?

also...

I liked that sentence a lot better when I thought the third word was "fiances". ;) I wish you could make it but hopefully I'll manage to spring free and go next year too.

EN World, not only expanding gaming horizons -- but wallets in some cases. ;) I think that one thing this site does is give people insights not just into games, but the gaming industry. Also, the number of talented people who post here at EN World -- from industry giants to independent publishers - is remarkable. There are many gaming products that I heard about first at EN World, and some of the reviews have lead me to truly great products.

My advice for our newer members is to try to learn a bit about the different products and companies, and also take advantage of some of the useful threads such as the DMing Advice one in my sig. We all have something to learn from each other.

William, for what it's worth, I count you among the people at this site who's posts I find thoughtful and enjoyable the vast majority of the time. You certainly contribute more than your share to making this a friendly place and valuable gaming resource. Congrats on the 3K and I'm looking forward to the next 3K. :)

What Rel said.

I would, its not that bad a drive, and my In-laws live there (my mother-in-law is a fantasy/Buffy fan but not a gamer.)

Reveal and Evilhalfling, it might be good to start a thread in General RPG discussion to see if there is an interest in an Omaha, Nebraska EN World Gameday. It might be a way for some people on the boards to meet each other and have some fun!
