My d20 modern character will be . . .

Jeph

Explorer
. . . A Japanese entrepreneur who has just made the transition from small time to big shot. Keeps a katana and wakizashi under his desk, and a daikyu in the closet. Last in a line of fallen samurai, and looking to regain lost family honor.

"I value my cell phone almost as much as my daisho."

Allegences: family, business, law, japan
Class: Charismatic 2 / Smart 2 / Fast 2 / Strong 2

(For those of you who've read Snow Crash, like Hiro Protagonist, but owns a nice business instead of works for a mafia-run pizza joint.)

. . . A goth gone Vampire LARPer 17 year old. Then she discovered that one of the guys in the group didn't need to role play it . . .

Allegences: none. People suck. they're over rated.
Class: Smart 2 / Dedicated 1

. . . Javier the illegal mexican immigrant construction worker. Nothing special, just a construction worker. Of course, we're not counting being a major operative for the 'ring' as special.

Allegences: the 'ring'
Class: Charismatic 1 / Tough 3 / Strong 1

Jap ent/ Sam character suggestions.
Okay, I'll post my 2 cents here on your idea.. after two readthrus (quick ones) and no actual playtest I would do the following:

1st level: Dedicated Hero with Skill Emphasis: Knowledge (Business)
Starting Occupation: Entrepreneur (Choosing Bluff and Diplomacy as Class skills since the Dedicated hero does not start with these as class skills.)
Starting Feats: Attentive (+2 to Sense Motive and Investigate) and Heroic Surge (extra move or attack action)
Skills: Jump 1 rank

2nd level: Dedicated Hero with Bonus Feat: Archaic Weapon Prof.

3rd Level: Dedicated Hero with Aware talent, Feat: Combat Reflexes
Skills: Jump 2 ranks

4th Level: Smart Hero with Exploit Weakness Talent, Stat increase to either Dex or Int

5th Level: Dedicated Hero with Bonus Feat: Blindfight
Skills: Jump 3 ranks

6th Level: Dedicated Hero with Cool under Pressure talent allows you to take ten in stressful situations (Diplomacy, Spot, Sense Motive and additional skills equal to wis bonus)
Feat: Combat Martial Arts

7th Level: Smart Hero with Bonus Feat: Weapon Focus (Katana)

8th Level: Smart Hero with Savant Talent (Knowledge:Business or Research)
Stat increase to Dex or Int

9th Level: Dedicated Hero with Bonus Feat: Deceptive
Feat: Defensive Martial Arts

10th Level: Dedicated Hero with Empathy talent.

11th-20th level: Martial Artist Advanced Class

There you go.. I played off the entrepreneur idea and the honor in business..

If you wanted to go the soldier route more than the marial arts route you could replace defensive martial arts with Personal Firearms Proficiency. Replace Jump with Knowledge (tactics) a class skill for the Smart Hero but not the Dedicated hero.

Why does he keep all those weapons in his office? That's kind of illegal and a little unusual. Tough on the cleaning lady too.

"Suzuki san, the cleaning lady accidentally sliced open her wrists getting your waste basket from under your desk.."

I like the goth though, that could be quite fun.

It's illegal to keep sharpened swords? I wasn't aware of this. And the reason he keeps them in his office, is, well, so that he can jump out of the window with them. Tell me that a business man bursting out of a 3rd story mirror-glass office building with a pair of samurai swords isn't cool. and by 8th level, he should have enough ranks in Jump and Tumble to not take falling damage. Assuming that the GM says that jumps of 29 feet and under are 2d6 damage drops, he could make it out of a 4th story window, taking 10.

LOL. :) They do have sheathes.

That's a good enough reason for me!

Kinda depends on the campaign setting, doncha think?
Not if you pick the right character. Not if you pick the ultimate d20 Modern character!

James Bond? pfft! Jackie Chan? nahhh!

The ultimate d20 Modern character??

BUCKAROO BANZAI

:D

(...imho, of course ;) )

No it isn't. Not in America, at any rate, I can't speak to other countries. Now, to carry them with you, you would need a permit I suppose (I imagine you would get odd looks if you walked in and asked for a conceal-carry permit for a katana), but to just store them? No.

Now, if he was keeping them in his back seat, then you get into another law alltogether...
