My d20 modern character will be . . .

Repairman Jack

I thought you meant John Ratzenberger's character in House 2, but that was Bill. Who is Repairman Jack?

A character from a series of books by F. Paul Wilson. The Tomb is a must read... Rakshasa in NYC... way cool.

Most of the books are thrillers rather than supernatural, however.

Jack would be a tough character to stat up... Tough, Fast, Smart. Not sure where I'd take him from there.

Repairman Jack

From the official site...

Repairman Jack
Jack is a denizen of Manhattan who dwells in the interstices of modern society. He has no official identity, no social security number, pays no taxes. When you lose faith in the system, or the system lets you down, you go to a guy who's outside the system. That's Repairman Jack.

But he's no Equalizer, no knight in shining armor. Jack is strictly fee for service, and he may be a few bricks shy of a full load himself, but at least he's under control...most of the time.

The name: Abe dubbed him Repairman Jack during the start-up years of Jack's fix-it business. Jack used it awhile as a sort of gag, but it stuck. Now, like it or not, he's known as Repairman Jack.

Jack facts:

* Jack hires out for cash to "fix" situations that have no legal remedy.
* He considers himself a small businessman and tries not to get emotionally involved
* He almost always gets emotionally involved
* He has a violent streak that he's always trying to control.
* He's a firm believer in Murphy's Law and always likes to plan things out, with a second escape route, a back-up plan, etc. But things rarely go as planned, and that makes him irritable and jumpy.
* He's low tech. Not a Luddite, but he believes technology is especially vulnerable to Murphy's Law. He's only recently got into computers and the web.
* He believes that men are from Mars, women are from Venus, and government is from Uranus.

who would I play?

Well, i'm making my first character right now, and guess who it is? Well, it's myself, alright. I went to a site, http://www.co.jyu.fi/~np/rpg/abilities.html, adn it told my my stats, roughly, and I'm a 1st level, 18 year old, smart hero with the Student starting occupation and a +7 wealth bonus. My one problem is that I don't have enouhg money to buy the d20Modern book, so I printed out the entire SRD, (well, not quite, I didn't print out the last page about Department 7, seemed kind of a waste) and I have no idea what kind of stuff I can get, becuse the rules for buying stuffa t 1st level ain't there!

Well, my second character will be an idealized version fo my future self, a Smart 3/Dedicated 2/Techie 10 computer geek/engineer with a few windfall feats :D.

An Odd Story

Back when I was a youngin' a District Attorney tried prosecuting a man for carrying a concealed weapon, a knife on his belt. The judge on the case dismissed all charges, declaring (in effect) that only a dang fool couldn't tell what a sheath held.

In more recent news, swords are legal in San Diego. That's right, you can wear a sword in the city of San Diego. It's perfectly legal, long as you wear it openly. Using a sword, even to defend yourself, is another matter (as far as I know).

The odd things you pick up when you're around some 48 years.:D

/me moves to San Diego, goes to business school, buys a pair of samurai swords, and rents a 3rd story office in a mirror-glass building

:D

I decided to make stats for myself and my friends. We decided that normal people are only 1st level characters, but anyone that we care about is at least 2nd level, and people will be at least 3rd level when they graduate from college. We figured that by 22 you'd be at least 3rd level if you've tried to do anything useful with your life.

So I basically made stats for us in a year or so, using the default array of stats, with the option to take 2 points from one ability to add 1 to another. Both me and my girlfriend rolled fairly well on our leveling-up Profession checks. I figured that, since we're in a recession, we'd start off with a base wealth of 3, which is pretty crappy and below average, but later rolls more than made up for it.

I actually plan to use these stats for a Christmas game when we'll get to kick ass and chew bubblegum as ourselves. It's been something of an inside joke/tradition among my friends.

Anyway, here's me.
