My Diviner is taking spell focus: evocation. What do you think about that?

Well, the subject says it all. I've seen this issue come up a few times as a tangental point but its never been its own post.

So, why is this okay or not okay?

Has the diviner already taken spell focus: divination? Is there some explanation, in game, for why spell focus: evocation would make sense? If not, make the player come up with one before you allow it. If they can't come up with one right now, then make the player wait until the next feat is received. That should give them plenty of time to think on it.;)

Well, its my PC and the DM has expressed no concern about it at all. The only reason I bring it up is that I've seen objections to it on the boards and I want to try to understand those objections.

No, I haven't taken spell focus: divination. My character is currently 5th level (human) and my feats are: Improved Inititive, Spellcasting Prodigy, Spell Focus Evocation, and Extend Spell.

The in-character reasoning goes something like this. My character was a very intelligent boy and wanted to learn as much as possible through magic. So, he became a diviner. Then, after many years of study, he decided that he needed to get out of the library and get some field experience - go digging through old tombs to find old tomes, that sort of thing. So, he became an adventurer.

Now, those extra divination spells each day really help out in the field - things like detect thoughts, detect secret doors and comprehend language have all been used many times. But, those nasty goblins and ghouls just keep coming in bigger and bigger waves. It sure would be handy if the bookworm could get better at blowing them into tiny flaming bits so they'll stop shooting so many arrows into him. So, he practices fireball alot. Gets really good at casting it. Now, stuff blows up better, he doesn't get stuck by so many arrows, and he lives to read more tomes in more tombs.

So
1. There's no rule against this sort of class/feat combination
2. I've got an in-character reason
3. There's much better ways to min-max if that was my only intent

Okay, now pounce on me! I can take it!

No problem with it whatsoever.

1. diviners/abjueres etc have no spells for which spell focus will help, ar ethey supposed to be banned form these feats?

2. I wont tell you how to roleplay your character, because I think the world should work someway. Because its your character.

3. You can almost freakin multiclass at will, somehow i think taking a spell focus in a school that isn't your specialty is a bit less extreme of a diversion from your divining focus than learning a whole new class.

See, this is a great example of why I think the mechanics of 3e add to character depth and role-play. Under 2e this would never have come up because you were a diviner and you would have stayed that way your whole career. Now characters have a little more depth.

There are choices that are good, pretty good, and no-brainers/must haves. You have selected 3 no-brainers and must-haves for your wizard, which is natural.

3.5 is on a rampage, tearing down all the no-brainers and must-haves, like spell focus, the buff spells, etc. I know if I was responsible for giving FR the 3.5 make-over, there is one must-have feat for Wizards that would be on my hit-list.

How is your DM going to handle conversion?
