I don't think that's likely.

I'm guessing you're unaware due to not being geriatric like some of us, but Barbarian wasn't a PHB class in either edition, and was in a poorly-selling (AFAIK) optional sourcebook in 2nd edition (a better selling but still optional one in 1E). And I doubt "a large percent" of the people playing Shadowdark played 1E at all, let alone 2E with said sourcebook.
In 1e, the barbarian was published in Unearthed Arcana. I don't have any data, but I've always assumed that it was a very well-known book, even if not universally liked.

The new necromancer is awesome. Not what I was expecting, but in a good way. Realistically it might end up being weaker than the wizard, but in terms of flavor it blows the wizard out of the water.

When I finally get the chance to play this bad boy I might slather myself in eyeliner like a roadie for the Cure.

Previous to that it was published in Dragon Magazine. That Barbarian was defined partly by its mistrust of magic, and wasn't allowed to use any magic items. Honestly I don't remember much else about it, though.
