First Post
Phil Reed recently pointed out the $5 sale of several FFG books. I do not have a lot of books, as I think I could entertain my self and my players nearly forever on the core books and I am a cheapskate extrordinaire, but I ended up buying 3.
Yesterday I recieved them- Monster's Handbook, Seafarer's Handbook and City Works , all form the Legends & Lairs line.
WOW! Publishers, this is how it is done.
The art is first rate, I spent the first 2 hours just oohing and Awing at the amzingly well done art. No color needed, just kick ass chiarascuro and penwork.
I found several rules bits, including chase rules in the City Works , that I could put to use immediately and the layout makes sense- no wondering where some little bit is.
I have mentioned on here before that I sometimes have trouble learning the rules form books, when your brain works like mine sometimes the rules as we see them seem convoluted and messy. Not here. Clear, sparkling wording that didn't leave me fuzzy in the head. Wide, clear columns on a white background made the text easy to deal with as well.
The ship maps and layouts in Seafarer's Handbook take what could have been a convoluted mess and make it easy to deal with. The ship combat section clearly lays out maneuvering with concise diagrams that make everything easily graspable.
The monster modifications and and tactics sections of Monster's Handbook (small complaint, doesn't this mean it is a handbook belonging to a monster?) leave em with the ability to surprise my longtime players without worrying about whether or not I have inbalanced everything. Witht he whole book broken down into dealing with monsters by type it seems it will be amazingly easy to deal with.
I am not a big fan of PrC's, but the urban prestige classes contain no chaff for my campaign. The city spells make tons of sense without seeming to overlap already present spells and the planning sections are the most useful bits I have seen since Jg and Suzi Browning decided to explain Magical Medieval society to all of us.
All of this in hardcover for $5 a piece!!!
I only bought three titles, but I am now a fan of FFG. I WILL be back for more.
PS, Did I mention the art absolutely rocks? Lots of fantasy books seem to cantain art that is good for what it si, this stuff would stand up in any art class I have ever been in.
FFG has my thanks, and have made me a loyal customer.
