Licids

Licids are mysterious creatures, parasites and symbiots who bestow strange abilities or attributes to their hosts.

They look like a tiny cross of a spider and an octopus. They have eight tentacles, with the two in the front for grasping and the others for movement and attaching to a host. They are eyeless and to modern knowledge deaf, they use a type of vibration sense to ‘see’ the world. Their mouth is on their belly region as well as a type of complicated tube system for gaining nutrients from the host. This system connects to the blood stream, lymph system, and central nervous system. This is used to gain protein, vitamins, minerals, immunity to diseases the host has experienced, and to experience the host’s senses it lacks.

With such a complicated system of connections, the most important is a tubule that carries a fluid from the licid to the host. While it keeps it’s self going on the hosts extra or normal nutrients, it processes a type of amino acid that triggers a magical or extraordinary response in the host. A good example is the ‘tempting’ licid. It’s a parasitic type of licid that causes the host to emit a pheromone that makes predators attack and kill it on site. Or the ‘enraging’ licid, a symbiotic type that gives the host the knowledge and ability to take to battle quickly (to use the improved initiative feat). The body doesn’t become addicted to the effect but the host may become reliant if it looses sight of its true nature.

As mentioned, licids are either as symbiots or parasites. The symbiotic types are very intelligent, but can’t speak. They have a limited telepathy that carries general ideas to a desired host. This is used to gain permission (it’s rude to attach without consent), after that it may speak to the host in its mind via the nervous connections. This type only takes from the extra nutrients in the host (often reducing the chance to gain weight from too much food) and intern grants awesome magical or extraordinary abilities. The parasitic licids look similar to a symbiotic counter part or are much larger in size. They hunt for a foolish host, and once attached, draw from the host as much nutrients as possible until the host is dead or it leaves to let it suffer. This isn’t true to all parasitic licids; some species use the host in some diabolical way. Of course they are intelligent and very evil. Instead of granting a blessing, they give misery and woe, eventually death and despair. Many of the evil types ally with other evil creatures in time of war.

These little creatures originate in the prime material plane; weather they’re natural or not is disputed. Some Sages, weather they know what they’re talking about or not, believe that they are creations of a genius wizard attempting to make the ultimate familiar. These sages say that the Dominating Licid was the original strain meant to be a familiar and watchdog. If the wizards home was invaded, these little creatures were to drop on and take over the minds of the invaders, through which the wizard would gain more and more laborers. At a point the licid escaped to the out side world and bred into many of diverse subspecies, each blessing or cursing their host with their magic.
This isn’t true says some elves, druids, and shamans. They believe they were gifts from the gods of nature to the faithful or humble. These people breed the symbiotic kind as pets and companions; fellow beings of nature and allies in war; and breed the parasitic ones as bioweapons; a natural creature to fight the foes of the forest, goblinoids.
In either case, these semi-rare creatures are now loose in the world to find a suitable companion or a new meal.

All licids have the following; Limited telepathy (communicates general ideas), acute vibration sense (feels vibrations in ground and air), and 10% magic resistance

Nurturing Licid
Tiny Magical Animal (Licid/ Symbiot)

Saves: Fort +0, Ref +3, Will +1
Abilities: Str 10 Dex 14 Con 13 Int 13 Wis15 Chr 11

Feats: Dodge

Climate/Terrain: any secluded woodland, often near wood elves
Organization: Solitary or paired
Challenge Rating: 1
Treasure: none
Alignment: Neutral Good
Advancement:

The Nurturing Licid is a green colored variety with a violet design on its back. It’s body is longer than it’s parasitic counter part the Tempting Licid. They usually fallow wood elves because they prize them in battle and as pets. These creatures are very calm and can be approached without it fleeing or attacking

Combat: They only fight if cornered or if their young are threatened. In battle they’ll use their forward tentacles to strike at a foe, and once it grabs hold will try to attach. If they attach to a foe, they’ll try to drain as much out of it to make it pass out, then it’ll dislodge and leave.

Special: When it attaches to a desired host, it grants it a regeneration rate of 1. When fighting, if it attaches to a foe, it drains blood to cause unconsciousness.

Tempting Licid
Tiny Magical Animal (Licid/ parasite)
Hit Dice: 1D4 (3hp)
Initiative: +0
Speed: 10’, Climb 5’
AC: 14 (+2 Dex, +2 size)
Attacks: 2/tentacles, +8 special attack
Damage: Tentacles, front two 1D2
Special: Attach to host, licid, granted power
Saves: Fort +0, Ref +3, Will +0
Abilities: Str 10 Dex 14 Con 12 Int 12 Wis10 Chr 12
Skills: Climb +4, Jump +2, Bluff +2, Hide +1,
Feats: Dodge, Combat Reflexes

Climate/ Terrain: any woodland, often near roads
Organization: Solitary or paired
Challenge Rating: 2
Treasure: None
Alignment: Neutral Evil
Advancement:

This licid has a similar look to the Nurturing Licid, Except that is violet design is bolder and its body is shorter. They make their homes near roads so they may find foolish hosts to leech off of and to keep predators away form its food. They are very aggressive if encountered (and found out) and they often hook to its adversary, making an advantage out of the situation.

Combat: its ‘prey’ often finds out these creatures mainly because it tries to fool elves. In these situations it fights to gain a hold on its adversary and just drain it or let its granted effect take hold. After this they just slither away with a full belly or a good laugh (if it could)

Special: These licids are usually mistaken by humans as a Nurturing variety. The thing they soon find out is that they make its host emit a pheromone that attracts predators. This also raises the blood lust of the predator making it prone to attack the host and tear it into a new meal. Sometimes the licid is eaten as well but usually it drops off before the host’s death and slithers off.

now hows that ? :heh:

Pretty good actually, a few comments though.

1. Magical Animal? I suggest you use one of the existing creature types, I think aberration would be the most suitable for the licids, this gives them a d8 HD, and Fort (bad), Ref (bad), and Will (good), or for a 1HD licid: Fort +0, Ref +0, Will +0.

2. Change 10% magic resistance, to Magic Resistance 12, not that it would actually stop any spell... ;)

Other than that, it's a good start. :D

thanx i was hopin it'd be ok.

I thought magical animal or beast or somethin was a monster type... oh well. any way abberation sounds good too. im going to stick with the low hit die though they arent meant to be even a slight threat on their own unless they get on you(thats why they need at least a temporay host) your suggestions on my choices for saves im having trouble decoding, do you mean they were bad bad and good choices? i chose a high ref as a natural defense(jump out of the hunters way and ect) and what else? i thank you for the suggestions, i'll use some in the next to, they should be done saturday( the enraging and convulsing licids)

talk later :D and thank you again ;)

I am afraid you will have to change the hit dice to 1d8 regardless, you could fix that they're supposed to have low Hp (which in my humble opinion, licids should not, as their name derives from lice, which where their original playtest name, and lice can be hard to kill... ;)) by reducing their con to a number below 10.

If you change them to abberation, which I strongly suggest you do, you will also have to change their saves. Aberrations only have one good save, and that is will. All their other saves are bad, which can be fixed by giving them the Lighting Reflexes feat, alternatly a high Dex score (which IMHO they should have), a Dex of 17 to 19 would be good.

Anyways, good luck, you'll need it, as licids are very hard to convert, perhaps you should read through the chapter on grafts and symbionts in the Fiend Folio?

Sorry I'm a lil late

Enraging Licid
Tiny Magical Beast (Licid/ Symbiot)
Hit Dice: 1D4 (2 hp)

Damage: tentacle, front two 1D2

Climate/ Terrain: Dry, Rocky terrain/ often inhabited areas
Organization: Solitary, Pairs. Usually on a host.
Challenge Rating: 1
Treasure: none

Advancement:

Then Enraging Licid is named for the unusual side effects caused by its attachment. It being one of the smaller types of licids is fast and agile, especially for having tentacles. The skin of this species is blood red with a yellow to white design on its back. Almost always looking for or on a host, it lives happily in urban areas.

Combat: This creature loves to be in the midst of battle, either as its own or helping a host. On its own it will jump at a foe, trying not to attach but to slice it with its tentacles. If on a host it encourages the host to take to battle quickly, putting the granted effect to good work.

Special: These licids always try to get a host, either by asking or fallowing a desired host until it gives in. the ability it grants is the knowledge and ability to take to battle quickly. (+1 Str, +1 Dex, improved initiative feat) this is often desired by barbarian and fighters, thought it come with a side effect. This licid causes an increase of adrenaline and testosterone, making the host irritable and aggressive. Else it’s a very friendly and ‘talkative’ species of licid.

Convulsing Licid
Small Magical Beast (licid/ parasite)
Hit Dice: 1D8(6 hp)
Initiative: +1
Speed: 20’, Climb 10’
AC: 16 (+2 natural, +1 size, +1 Dex)
Attacks: Tentacles, Claws, +6 special
Damage: Tentacles 1D3, Claws 1D6
Special: Attach to host, licid, granted power, spider climb
Saves: Fort +2, Ref +1 Will +0
Abilities: Str 15 Dex 13 Con 15 Int 11 Wis 9 Chr 9
Skills: Climb +11, Jump +9, Balance + 5, Hide + 8, Move Silently + 6,
Feats: Combat Reflexes, Dodge, Toughness,

Climate: Any inhabited/ castles and forts
Organization: Solitary/ Paired
Challenge Rating: 2-3
Treasure: None
Alignment: Chaotic Evil
Advancement:

This is the largest and most hated of licids. This creature is about two feet tall standing, and has foot long front tentacles; the rest of its limbs are segmented legs ending in sharp claws. It’s a shade of maroon red with a black design on its back, as well as a very large body. Its hated so because it hunts for its “ host” in inhabited areas, dropping on them in secret, and feeds until its demise.

Combat: This is also known as the assassin licid, mainly for its ability to climb walls and ceilings while stalking its prey. If confronted, it will lunge at the foe to get a good cut and slash in before fleeing for safety or attaching to it. The thing that makes it even more a threat is it has a carapas to protect it from blows. Ultimately, it prefers to stalk rather than confront face to tentacle.

Special: Another reason why its know as the assassin is the venom it injects. Yes, instead of the usual amino acid it produces paralyzing and incompasitating venom. This venom causes the host to just shut down until dead or someone helps it. In rare occasions the venom will cause an allergic reaction in stead of its normal effect. These reactions make the host extremely nauseous and convulse into seizures. In the end, you would really wish the normal effect than the allergy. If you live this reaction, you’ll suffer permanent brain damage and lose of appetite.

I kept with how i did things just so it'd be easier for me. thank you pplz for your coments though :D
