(My players stay out) Replacing emotion as a spell-like ability in 3.5

So some 3.0 monsters had the old emotion spell, now broken into different parts. If you were using a monster that had it for use in 3.5, what would you convert it into? (For those of you who are going to suggest checking WotC's update info, I did; it updates only the DR for this creature.)

Specifically, in this case, I need to covert the ability for a creature which, according to the FF, uses emotion "to either fill victims with fear or root them in place for an easy kill."

Sounds like it either uses fear or crushing despair. How about giving it a Frightful Presence and an Aura of Despair?
