My rant at RPG.net

I'm an Elric guy, not a CoC guy. But I totally agree that Chaosium's expertise seems to be in dropping the ball. Dragon Lords of Melnibone is probably the worst D20 product I own, and they are so far behind in releasing any products to support it that I have totally lost interest in the system.

Well, Joe, you have to remember that RPG.net is frequented by some of the most effeet, snobbish, and spiteful gamers on the 'Net. I mean, they have some good columnists, and I read the reviews there on a daily basis, but I think I have yet to see a thread not degenerate into massive flaming of one sort or another. They also all hate d20 to death.

I much prefer the ENWorld crowd. :)

As for your comments, sure, they were a bit aggressive, but they were generally spot-on. Chaosium was once my favorite game company, but then they sold Runequest...

If DoJ/Hero Games can produce excellent, voluminous material ON TIME with *5 employees*, and this after monetary problems that make Chaosium's CRPG fiasco look like small potatoes (as I understand it), I don't really see why Chaosium needs to be in such a constant tailspin.

They were once the best game company on the block. I'd love to see them reclaim that status. CoCd20 could be the means, but I don't know if they'll figure it out in time.

Urgh. Not too much offense intended Buzz, but you have a much higher opinion of Steve Long than I do. Voluminous? Yes. Excellent? Ehn. They have been doing a great job of putting out product though...

Seriously?

Wow. I can't imagine anyone having major problems with the HERO5e products released so far. I hereby declare that you're on crack. :D That, or not much of a HERO fan.

The point remains, however, that they've been through serious business upheavals, have only 5 people working at the company, and yet meet deadlines, keep their fan base interested, and put out products a cut above the norm.

I have to agree - RPGNet is a cesspool. I don't go there very often, and that thread only reminded me why.

I just got my copy of the "new" H.P. Lovecraft's Dunwich supplement for1920's Call of Cthulhu from Chaosium. I say "new" but, as most of you probably already know, it is for the most part a reprint of their earlier 1991 version of the book. This time around, however, it features dual stats for both classic CoC and d20 CoC. The d20 CoC stats are in the back in Appendix 3.

Now I've only had this about a couple of days, but at face value the d20 stats and conversions look good, or perhaps I should say "legit". Here you will find d20 conversions of all 35 NPCs in the book, the new creatures (the Son of Yog-Sothoth, Abhoth, and several Children of Abhoth), and d20 conversion notes for the new spells found within (some of which already exist in the d20 version of CoC, so you are referred to that text). d20 fans who favor crunch to fluff be warned, however: this book is heavy on the fluff, light on the crunch. And as well it should be, considering what it is.

I highly recommend this book to anyone who loves d20 CoC but may not be familiar with Chaosium's products. This is Golden Age Chaosium - Dunwich is a richly detailed setting and you will probably get hours of use out of it. I have long been a fan of their other sourcebooks that feature Lovecraftian locales like Escape from Innsmouth and Arkham Unveiled. I really look forward to the dual stat reprints of these as well.

Patiently and eagerly awaiting Pulp Cthulhu,

Thanks for the posting. I was wondering if perhaps I was a little too harsh in my original 'blast' of Chaosium.

On the whole level thing for the dual statted book. Is this an adventure or ?

I'm very curious how this works since D&D is level based and BRP is skill based. Any info on it?

And by the way, please feel free to jump over there and share your own experiences. It's a big net after all.

Man, talk about impatient

I really can't see why your complaining. I waited 18 years for Chaosium to release Hero Wars. You need to master your patience karma, dude.

Hope ya dug the maps in Dunwich Jaerdaph, my housemate Chris Boll did em and I thought they looked fabulous before he sent the files. We still haven't gotten the book at either of our local game stores so we haven't been able to see em in the book yet
