Mystic Theurge - would it be popular?

A new campaign that will progress from 1st to 20th level is starting.

I would take it, and I hate the cursed thing. Honestly, I've paytested this monstrousity to death already. Once you give up the idea of saying "fireball" to every time the DM asks you what you want to do for your action, this class becomes a munchkin machine. You suck trying to get into it, then after two levels you are one of the stars of the show. After a few levels, you ARE the show!

Of course it would be popular -- it's a totally new concept. I mean, a PrC like Arcane Archer is nice but you have it, the Deepwood Sniper, the Peerless Archer, the Initiate of the Order of the Bow, and that's only counting WotC-classes. I won't count all the cleric-fighter multiclass, especially when considering that the Paladin and the Ranger are somewhat multiclassed base class.

So, yes, I would play it, out of curiosity.

That said, my natural preference would go to playing a pure wizard, and my powergamer instinct would go to playing a pure cleric.

Had I made this poll, I would have posed these options rather:

1 I would not play a Mystic Theurge, I'm not interested.
2 I would not play a Mystic Theurge, my DM would not allow it.
3 I would play a MT, out of curiosity.
4 I would play a MT, because I think it's powerful.

Hmm...

Anyone else get the feeling that this PRC might be over powered. By 20th level you could cast 8th level wizard and 8th level cleric spells. Goind straight wiz your only major advantages would be the bonus feats and 9th level spell casting which for some reason doesn't seem quite as powerful. I hope I'm wrong.

Oh, my next character is going to be a Bard/Barabarian Gnome.

Aust, there's about three dozens other threads out there to discuss the munchkinism, or lack thereof, of this class.

I haven't managed to play much in the way of 3e spellcasters yet (well, my current character does have two 1st-level ranger spells per day... ), so I voted for mystic theurge. I think it's got potential, and it's a good way to try both cleric and sorcerer or wizard at the same time.
