Mystic Theurges and other prestige classes

If a prestige class has a spell progression that gives, say +1 level of existing class, can this apply to the Mystic Theurge prestige class? i.e. A Cleric 3/Wizard 3/Mystic Theurge 3/Celestial Mystic 3 who increases his/her Celestial Mystic level could have the spells per day increase the spell of his Mystic Theurge class, thereby increasing his/her Cleric and Wizard spells per day?

At first glance I'd say no, but I don't see anything that would prohibit it. If a prestige class specifically adds to an arcane or divine class, I'd definitely say Mystic Theurge is out, but in the example case of a Celestial Mystic, it says "any spellcasting class".

This might be part of a larger question of whether or not prestige class spells per day like this can affect other prestige classes, which is something I've never really considered.

Opinions?

No, because the Mystic Theurge itself is not a spellcasting class, it only helps with spellcasting in other classes. Thus you could choose wizard or cleric, but not MyTh.

I guess that's probably true. I started thinking of the definition of 'spellcasting class', and I'm not sure that Mystic Theurge fits it, because you don't get any new spells/day for that class, you get spells/day for two other classes. It would be interesting if someone took the other side of the argument though.

It seems to me that any class which adds to the level of a pre-existing spellcasting class (such as Mystic Theurge) isn't a spellcasting class itself. It doesn't actually give you the ability to cast spells, it just allows you to continue progressing in one aspect of your original class(es). I would have to say that Celestial Mystic can add levels to Cleric or Wizard (as per your example), but not to Mystic Theurge.

Right.

Mystic Theurge could add 1 to your spellcasting level in the Holy Liberator class, and you'd get extra spells per day and increase your Holy Liberator caster level.

But it couldn't add to your spellcasting level in the Hospitaler class, because a Hospitaler doesn't have its own spells and caster level... it just modifies another class.
