"Name" level?

???

Maybe I am _totally confused_ here... but isn't "name level" player slang for old 1st edition days when each level for a class had a particular name starting at 3rd level or higher?

Names for each level of magic user were something like:

Prestidigitator, Thaumagurist, Evoker, etc...

Am I totally wrong in thinking this for 25 years now?

"Name" level was the level at which 1st edition characters stopped earning level titles, usually around 9th-12th level, and started gathering followers. The 9th-level fighter could build a stronghold, attract followers, and became a "lord" in name.

In 3rd edition, characters can attract followers by taking the Leadership feat at level 6, so under the d20 rules, 6th level is "name" level.
