Name this series! Or author!

I need help with something. Someone recommended a series (and its author) to me about a week ago when I was randomly talking to them at the grocery store, and the name has slipped my mind. But here are some thigns I could tell you about the series.

- There are quite afew books (between 7 and 9, I think)
- The series deal with a modern day wizard who happens to work for the police department (I beleive he is a detective or something)
- The books are almost written like episodes (or so I was told)
- I want to say the author's last name started with a C (but I could be completely wrong).

I might be able to remember what it was if some names are put out there (with the author's name).
....I need help (which most of you know )
