s/LaSH mentioned the Japanese legendary sword Masamune. What he didn't mention were the other two legendary blades, Murasame, and Muramasa.

Goro Nyudo Masamune was a real person, living in Japan around the late 13th-early 14 century. He is regarded as a swordsmith of godly proportions. The idea of a single blade bearing his name though seems to be just legend.

Murasame is the cursed blade, though its power is extreme. It is unnaturally cold supposedly, meaning that when drawn it sheds drops of water since it cools and condenses the water vapor around it. Supposedly, if you put this blade and the Masamune blade into a stream, the Masamune blade would repel leaves from itself, but the Murasame blade would simply cut them as they run into the sword.

Muramasa, like Masamune, is a historical Japanese swordsmith, though very little is known about him. He was supposedly a student of Masamune, but whereas Masamune held that a sword was meant to be used in defense, to protect life and not take it if not necessary, Muramasa believed that swords were meant only to deal death. Hence, his blades are associated much more with death and bloodshed than Masamune's (though no actual swords are, as far as I know, historically attributed to Muramasa). Like Masamune, the legends say that there is a single sword out there that bears his name; the Muramasa (sword). Though not cursed, this sword is most likely quite likely to pull its wielder into bloody conflict (that's just my assumption though).

And of course, all three swords are very popular in Final Fantasy games (though Muramasa only appears in the most recent games). :)

More information can be found here: http://www.hybridbe.com/fa_20202.shtml

I didn't know there was a third sword. The version I read mixed the Muramasa and the Murasame together, and had Mutamasa's sword be the one that split floating leaves in two.

The story I read then commented that was it said "Muramasa's swords are fiersome, but Masamune's swords are humane."

Graywand, Cat's Claw, Sting, Orcrist, Foe-Hammer, Excalibur

I'm looking for cool names for swords! Help a tleilaxu out

Greywand was Fafhrd's sword, Heartseeker was his dirk. Cat's Claw was the Mouser's dagger, but Scalpel was his rapier. I always liked those names.

Some others:
Sunderer
Widowmaker

Two of the most recognizable swords in my campaign world are:

Oakenblade - an intelligent blade of elven craftsmanship dedicated to the destruction of the followers of the god of chaos. It has a long slim steel blade, engraved with vines and leaves. The crosspiece is decorated with bronze oak leaves, and the handle is wrapped in gold.

al Nasham - or "the Black Blade" in the common tongue of my world. This unholy sword is dedicated to the destruction of the followers of the goddess of life and the overthrow of her church. Al Nasham, is, in its natural form, an ominous looking longsword. The blade was forged from an unknown black metal that seems to suck the light out of the air around it. Along the length of the blade, in the blood groove, is a glowing red inscription that calls for death to the goddess of life.

A red rose decorates the silver crosspiece on either side of the sword, trailing its thorns along the length of the crosspiece. The handle is made from the same metal as the blade, and is wrapped in red wire. The pommel is a silver orb, and is engraved with the same glowing red inscription as the blade.

Some other names include Tilo's Talon - a sword used by a follower of the goddess of air; Takeshi's Fury - a kama created by the spirits of thunder and lightning - one can see thunderclouds and flashes of lightning in its blade; Icefang - an icy burst heirloom longbow; Ghostbane - a heavy mace dedicated to killing undead; and Grumbelly - an intelligent greatsword containing the spirit of the lizardman who once weilded it.

A few other cool names from literature...

Terminus Est
Ice
Need

A couple of weapon names from past games...

Feeder
The Mind
The Body
Anger of the Land
Gambit
Lucky Seven

Pointy McStabStab. It's a short sword named by a deceptively stupid half-orc, who likes to poke the elven ranger that he's travelling with.

FillUp Morris. A.K.A. "+6 Longsword of Moderater Slaying."

Honestly, the first one is a real sword from one of my games, the second one isn't, but I'll post more later.

And the most famous of all...

Stormbringer - Elric's black blade
Sword of Dawn - Hawkmoon (I think used somewhere else)

Blackrazor - White Plume Mountain

From my games...
Bob - The sword of few words
Pale Wind
Gamble
Orcslayer
Morblade
Silver Eagle

With all this talk of Famous Swords, I'm just surprised that Blackrazor is being wholly atttributed to D&D, when it was originally Stormbringer's sister Runeblade (which belonged to Elric's cousin or somesuch, it's been about 12 years or so now since I read the books). I know the name made it's way into D&D, but with Stormbringer being bandied around, let's put Blackrazor in it's proper place. :)
