Names of Troop Types

Hello Everyone,

I'm curious for my home brew on the various namings of troop types. Is there a site or book that details some interesting types for a game or are there any that you guys can think of off the top of your head that may assist me.

I mean we have the basic: archers, light and heavy infantry and cavalry but I'm more interested in an interesting variety of troop types such as Halberdiers, Longbowmen and so on that also fit into the fantasy ethos.

Any help in this regard is very much appreciated.

Cataphractoi (sp?), huscarls, gendarmes, lances (unit type -- very mixed), freelancers (literally! These are cavalry/knights-for-hire), there are all sorts of titles, types, and designations.

Yeah, that Osprey Men-At-Arms link is pretty good, as they cover all sorts of periods and types of troops, but you would probably need to pick up the books to get the most out of the site

Arbalesters are crossbowmen, and look up the Turkish Jannissaries.

Heh.... look up the troop types for computer wargames (such as Age of Empires etc.), should be able to find the names and descriptions on their websites, no need to buy anything....
