Naming Characters After Yourself?

Is this wrong for a player to do? Why or why not?

Wrong, no. Lame and lazy? yeah.

Every group I've been in has berated players for such lameness until they came up with something better.

The worst we ever endured was a Fighter named Rethgif.

I included Legolas as it too would still fall under the "disrupt the game" clause.

Two players both having male elves, and one picks Lagolas and the other complains because they want the name but didn't think it would be allowed...I have sen it happen. So best to leave well known names as off-limits for DM and PCs.

Well, let's just say that that's a problem for some groups and not others. I think at such a point I would toss both of them the PHB, Elves of Golarion, Complete Elves Handbook, or any book that had a list of Elf names and insist they pick from that list.

No wonder he names everything after himself!

Possibly its a 'I'm in a different country' thing (Australia).

'John Thomas' is a euphemism for male genitalia . Not particularly common, but there we go.

Certainly nothing wrong with using your own name, though the rule in our group is you have to modify in some fashion.

My brother John has used Johanne.

My friend Ward used Swan (mixing the letters of his first and last name to make a new name).

I've had others use slightly tweaked versions of pig latin, and so forth.

Heck, we've even used pulled out the Tolkien books and used (lesser known) names from the glossary. Our most infamous example was Mordor, the Paladin.

I've played in games where the players reversed their names. I was Niloc, which wasn't bad. The others came out as Nosyaj, Kram, Yrag, Ikciv and Nerrad. Odd but it seemed to fit the game.

Yeah but, if you had a friend named Lee it's come out Eel. Which would have to be a thief character.
