Nasty weapon idea...

The cells in the antennae would die off shortly after removal from the rust monster, and whatever chemical reaction they have towards iron to rust it would cease then. As dead flesh, it would cease receiving the nutrients that allow the chemical reaction.

Has there been an ecology article on the rust monster in Dragon at some point? I'm curious as to the explanation. I wonder if it's like a skin secretion or what... Seems to me they would sweat (insects don't sweat, but...) out a rapid oxidizing agent. Harvesting whatever gland produces this secretion would be the best way to go.

Hmm... in any case.. I can see how this could actually be made to work: Simply have the skin of said monster be preserved with the appropriate spell, then have it made pernament with a pernamency spell as well (if it works that is).

Either that, or simply harden the antennae if the rust monster by drying it out, and hope it keeps some of its probperties.

My group has a shield covered with rust monster hide. I was worried at first about the balance of the shield, but the group has it covered in leather and stashed all of the time. They are worried about accidental loss of armour and weapons. As far as iron doors go...if you don't want them to rust it then just say it has no effect. Or you can let them rust away all the doors and ruin any safe hiding place there might have been.
