Navy NCIS

Dr. Zoom

First Post
Anyone catch Navy NCIS this week? Two naval computer techs (geeks) played an online RPG against one another and it crossed over into real life. What did you think of the episode? It did not demonize RPG's but it did use the geek stereotype. In the end, one of the investigator's gave another who did not understand RPG's a pen and paper RPG complete with dice as a gift.

Caught the second half of it. I'm glad they focused on the fact that the two sailors who played the game had a serious "reality grip" problem that transcended the computer game, with the constant one-upmanship between the two being the real problem.

And the gift-reciever's only real gripe was that the RPG he got was in spanish. :D

Was that a real RPG he was given? I couldn't make out the cover.

I found it amusing that the MMORPG in question was more exciting looking than any I have seen so far. Anyone know where the graphics were from? i doubt they were in CBS' hands without some game company lending them.

At first I was worried about the show falling into the RPG=Evil trap, but it quickly showed it was really about some whacked indviduals, not the game it self. I do wonder, does anyone actually have the "character charters" the lab tech was talking about? i don't play these games, so i had never heard of someone haveing a particular creed.

Yeah. I think it was a nice touch that Amy the lab tech seemed to enjoy the game and was able to play it, but I think it would have been better and less predictable had the gamer in the NCIS team been somebody less overtly weird and geeky - perhaps the former Secret Service agent. My problem is that the only gamers depicted were either very strange, obsessed, or completely divorced from reality. It'd be nice to see a normal person who goes to work in a suit using some of his time off to slay orcs. Still, I've seen far worse portrayal of gaming and gamers.

I tend to doubt that it was a real RPG, but it did make for a cute ending.

Not really, we are not so much discussing science fiction television, as we are discussing RPGs in a television show. If we were discussing simply the plot of the show, I could see that statement, but the point here is actually how the game was treated in the show.

oK final an episode which involves regular Navy people instead of something like the agency (cia show from last year). Slightly boring and the only highlights was Amy (lab tech) talking down the doctor (guy from Uncle). However What bugged me is blood on sword was fresh after being at the bottom of the bay and how many days after the cut? I will give it one or two more shows before I bail.
