Necromancer/White Wolf hacked

Did yours apparently be sent from yourself, that is, your own email address to that same address? Mine were, but there's no way they actually got into my email account, since the password I use for that is different from any other password I use elsewhere.

Yeah, that's exactly what happened to me. But I got on the line with my ISP, they reviewed the mail server, headers etc. determined it was I believe a Yahoo address sending it, and they'd just set it to dupe my address (and probably everyone else, as they likely e-mailed all 65,000 people in one blast). They pointed out that reporting the address would do nothing, since it was likely under a false name etc. anyways.

PLUS, there are much more lucrative things to use the information for - get into the email accounts, change the passwords to something else so the owner can't get back in, and then use it for sending spam.

That in itself is pretty pointless though, is it not? Anybody who has e-mail with their ISP is only a phone call away from having the hackers locked out again.

Dude... they hacked the White Wolf servers. I think that they can hack a simple POP server. And I think that they have. The email they 'sent' me was, after a quick trace, most certainly sent from my own account (hence my post elsewhere on this forum). More disturbingly, it looks as though my Paypal account has also been compromised. Merry !@#$%!& Christmas, eh? :(

Instead of watching cartoons tomorrow morning, I guess I get to spend the day down at the local FBI field office (which, BTW, is where all of you will also want to go to report the extortion attempts that the hackers have put to you). Also, if the Secret Service has a branch office in your hometown, you might want to fill out a report there, too. Finally, hit this site:

Why's it so hard to believe White Wolf's servers get hacked? Tonnes of companies use 3rd party open-source software for their web operations, and often it's riddled with security holes. I have no idea if White Wolf is using that type of software, or some form of ironclad enterprise level solution, but whatever they were using, apparently it had holes.

Worms, SQL injection attacks, etc.

I'm Canadian, so I don't think the FBI can or would help me in any case :)

The whole "e-mail that it looks like it came from oneself" thing isn't just used by hackers...it's also used by spam-advertisers etc.

Check your Paypal account, and contact them. Hopefully they can help you quickly..

Yep. Already taken care of. I had to remove the bank account info, automatically reverting the Paypal account to unverified status, but once I did that I was able to lock everything up tight. So I still have the account, but it's slightly less functional than it was.

The FBI isn't going to be able to do a whole heck of a lot against international criminal organizations.

Not directly, but the relationships the FBI has established with foreign governments can do a whole heck of a lot. The FBI doesn't exist in a vaccuum, it actively fosters relationships and cooperation with foreign law enforcement agencies (even going so far as to offer training and technical assistance).
