Need a military term

First Post
I am working on my Nexus game and I decided that I want to break up vehicle combat into two types: Ground Assault and this other type I'm trying to come up with a name for.
Ground Assault covers ground combat so ground vehicles and helicopters. Combat is short to medium range and terrain is a major factor. There is little vertical to the combat in this type.

The other kind would cover more 3d types of combat and long scale combat. This would be things like Air, Space, and underwater combat. Missiles are fired at great distances and you may have a few actions till it reaches its target. Combat is more about EW and counter measures then dodging.

So I need a term for that other kind of vehicle combat. Maybe some real military term that covers that.

Any ideas?

BVR and BVRC (Beyond Visual Range Combat) are actual military terms, when talking about such combat you will also see the term LRC and LRCA (Long Range Combat Aircraft). When we used lasers to paint targets for the hellfire missile system this would be very common because the helicopter would hide in a valley and fire without ever coming up over the ridge. The only other system we used these terms for if I recall was for Spectre Gunships as the would fly in and sometimes above clouds firing at whatever we would target.

This is back in the 80's, so I imagine these days they have a lot of toys to play with currently.

Here's what the wikipedia says:

AC-130H Spectre[29] (Prior to circa 2003)

  • 2× 20 mm M61 Vulcan cannon
  • 1× 40 mm (1.58 in) L/60 Bofors cannon
  • 1× 105 mm (4.13 in) M102 howitzer

(Current Armament)

  • 1× 40 mm (1.58 in) L/60 Bofors cannon
  • 1× 105 mm (4.13 in) M102 howitzer

I watched these in Gulf War I from my M1A1 tank, along with the A-10's (which saved our butts from enemy artillery) and Apaches. Very awesome to have air support.
