Need a new campaign setting!

DWARF

First Post
After some severe DM burnout and a summer of hellish work, a player of mine has offered to take up the reigns of DMing.

So he wants to buy a campaign setting (like me, he has little time to plan things, with University and all...). We used to play in the Kingdoms of Kalamar, and he wants something different (I know the world too much).

So what do you suggest as a good campaign setting. We won't be playing tons, so it doesn't have to be enormous. Probably something medieval, without a lot of gunpowder/steampunk/clockworks stuff. But if you think a setting is good despite not falling in this specific mold, please suggest it.

Thank you!

Mmmm, sweet Playerdom

Getting one of your players to GM for you has to be one of the world's sweetest feelings. Until you end up GMing again.

Scarred Lands is cool now that they have a Gazetteer.

There are a lot of neat 'exotic' campaign worlds out like Nyambe or Rokugan.

There is also a lot of nice free material on the web. I really love Mahasarapa. It's an Oriental Adventures setting with a Southeast Asian theme.

Gary Gygax has a big Egyptian themed meta-adventure in a unique setting. If I were DMing classic 3E right now I would pick that one up and give it a look through. Small world with lots of resources, maps, and ideas your friend could adapt to whatever he wanted.

get this one called Green Skins.. or something like that.. it is basically one with I think.. no humans.. just lotsa different metas.

I bought Härnworld yesterday, out of a whim. Now i just want to gm that world (using d20 rules) :)

  1. Very easy to read
  2. Low magic
  3. Low tech
  4. Only humans, dwarves & elves (incl ½elves)
    [/list=1]

That is good to hear since the last time I was here I kinda let myself get involved with the d20 vs. Hârn discussion that unfortunately became very ugly (I was to blame myself...). Now I am back and you will not hear anything inflammatory from me regarding d20 since I have been trying to get d20 people to game Hârn with the D&D rules. BTW Fenlock, have you got the D&D Hârn Guide or the Religious Invocations?

Very easy to read

He he... That is a first. Great to hear that.

And to clarify this these races are very rare outside their boundaries. It does happen that there are members of these races who leave their homes but since the elves look like beautiful humans they easily melt it. Stocky bearded short men are another fiver though... ;)

For those who are not discuraged by Hârn I urge you to visit Columbia Games Inc. and get their new HârnQuest PDF articles that can be bought for a low fee. The most recent is a castle, dragons, and tournaments (no rules). If that don't interest you then there are a hell of a lot of good free material on my own site at Swords & Shields.

I hope this helps. :)

Better hide from Psion...

I'd pimp my own setting , but I will have to admit that it isn't quite ready for actual game play yet... unless you are willing to restrict your campaign to a particular city at first (which wouldn't be that restricting, as the cities can be huge...). :D

I would recommend either freeport or bluffside. These are both city settings which makes them small enough for a GM to learn pretty quickly and you can expand the world when needed (heck you could even put them both in the same world and make a sea voyage to move between them since they are both port cities). With a severe lack of time I highly recommend Freeport. Buy the three introductory adventures (Available Here) and pick up the book later. The intro adventures have enough info about the city to get you started. This makes the setting easy on the wallet and easy on time investment. Besides that it's where my upcoming game is going to be set. (evil GM laugh)

This post is published under the d20 Lisence and the entire this is listed as OGC
:D

Oathbound without a doubt.

This is a setting quite new, lots of imaginations has been poured in this setting. Read the review in the review section of ENWorld if you are in doubt.

Have fun!
