Need advice on a name

Playing a Sun Elf, Wizard (Enchanter).

I need some advice on a name though (the hardest part of character creation IMO).

I'd like a rather long name (similiar in name length to Mordenkainen) but sort of "Elvish" sounding if possible (if that makes any sense). And hopefully I can make a nice short nickname out of it (ie If I was named Mordenkainen, my friends might call me Mordy for short).

I usually use the 2E Elvish handbook and 2E Elves of Evermeet books for inspiration, but I am at work and, well you know the rest =)

Any advice?

Fast FR name generation algorithm:
1. Pick a random word.
2. Replace every i with a y.
3. Add punctuation marks to taste.

Examples from the menus of this browser:
Fyle
Edyt
Fa'Voryte
Prynt
Prynt Pre'Vyew

Alternatively, just look at the names of messageboard posters, and steal one.

Merak Spielman
Ravellion
Kilmore
Remathilis
Emirikol

You could also apply the FFR namegen algorithm to these:

Merak Spyelman (sounds Jewish)
Ravellyon
Kylmore (or Kyl More <--- I LIKE this one)
Rema'thylis (or Remathilys, but that sounds more Greyhawk)
Emy'ry'kol

(Spielman: German, means "the playing man." Interpret that as you will, but the family crest includes a pair of dice)

Open the phone book and randomly point at names. Mix and match first and last names.

Replace i with y
Replace z, c and s with x or k (when it works)
Replace k with q. Don't add a u.
Replace random vowels with apostrophies.

Where is the character from? Add "of location." Like, M'rak Spyelman of Ameryka. Or replace the "of" with a nonsense word that sounds like it should mean "of" in another language. In a book I read, there is a character named "Chak'resarkandin ip Kathardin." "ip" means "of" or "from," and Kathard is the country he's from, which leaves people trying to pronounce his first name.

Anagrams are also cool.

Just pick your favorite character and have at it! Some examples:

Gandalf
Raistlin Majere (my personal favorite)
Frodo
Professor X
Conan
Tanis
Tom Hanks

You can't just yoink famous names and use them! You gotta mess with 'em first. Like this:

Dalgalf
Maistlin Rajere
Drofo
Professor Y
Nanoc
Sinat
Mot Sknah

My Advice: If you have kazaa or a similar P2P downloading program, do a search on 'Elven Dictionary'. This thing is INVALUABLE when creating elven words and names.

I created my name using something similar (the name component part of the Appendix in The Silmarillion). The name Angcuru means 'Iron Skill', which can be interpereted in several ways.

These are a few that I've come up with that might serve you well.

Anaristalindir (Spellsinger of the Sun)

Luhtavairar (Weaver of Enchantments)

Istaranar (Wizard of the Sun)

I also take requests. Give me a basic idea of what you want the name to be the elven equivalent of and I'll get it for ya.;)

I love the name "Mot."

Kudos to anyone who can tell me where that name was made famous!

Well... famous for geeks, that is.

That would be the Enterprise's barber. Picard himself on one occasion as well.

I know way too much about Star Trek.

Thanks for all your ideas...

I settled on a name...

Chambelleon Lathantal
(kam - bell - lee - on)

I got it from an old 2E suppliment, "Pages from the Mages". It is really a type of magic book, but I liked the sound of it. Technically it was Chambeeleon (kam - BEE - lee - on), I just changed the pronunciation some. It would be similiar to calling myself Tome, Arcanix or Lexicon... Well, you get the drift.
