Need faction names for 1 hours time!

Carnifex

First Post
So, I'm running another session of a d20 game I DM tonight, in about an hours time. The game takes place in a huge mass of urban conglomeration, literally a city at the end of the multiverse - it's called Entropy, the Cities or the Thieves depending on who you asks, and is effectively a demiplane sitting on the energy sink through which all energy entropically and slowly drains out of the universe :p

Now obviously there's more to it than this, but the advantage of starting the characters as level 5 PC's with no memory of anything but their first names means that I can expand on things as they come into contact with them more and more.

Anyways, there are, unsurprisingly, lots of factions, sects and guilds (Planescape style) contending for power in this city. It's a really, really big place, and in reality there are smaller, more distinct areas each the size of a normal city sitting within the mass of urban sprawl; there are also 'dead zones' of deserted buildings in some areas, where monsters and worse prowl. The city also goes *down* into layer upon layer of caverns, necropolises, sewers etc.

The city is a mix between classic fantasy and steam-tech/steampunk feel. It's called the 'Thieves' sometimes because the demiplace has very wierd planar boundaries, and sometimes simply steals areas of other planes (mostly off the Prime Material planes) and ports them into itself, usually from cities or urban environments due to their 'higher concentration of entropic energy'. So it's quite a varied place :)

Anyway, I need a coupla faction names for two groups in particular in Entropy, because they're two groups that the PC's may be coming into contact with more this session.

The first is a mercantile-themed group. Probably originally grew from a collection of merchants etc in the market area of the Cities, a region called Coppergate, where most transactions take place; the faction is concerned with keeping the flow of interplanar trade through Entropy going, and with as much as possible control over it and keeping it as much to Coppergate as possible to give them influence over the other factions. The upper ranks of the faction will probably include various genie-kind, with some sort of exiled 'Prince' ruling Coppergate and the faction overall.

So I am having a creativity block and can't think of a good name for 'em - and also need a name for a military/guard wing of the organisation who patrol Coppergate and protect the merchants.

The other faction originated as an Alchemist's Guild, but have become much more powerful. They control the Mist Quarter, so named for the constant haze of chemical smogs and fogs that hover over the myriad alchemy labs and factories there. As well as the usual alchemical pursuits, their leadership are also very interested in exploiting the flow of entropic energy that siphons through the demiplane - it makes healing etc much harder, but must be good for something. They're hoping eternal life, ultimate knowledge or incredible wealth would be involved :) So a faction of mad alchemists seeking the ultimate truth - what to call them? (And again, a name for their military wing would be good).

So please, good people of ENworld, I beseech thee in my hour of need, please help me think up some cool and preferably intimidating or impressive names for these two factions and their military sections! :)

Hmm, post turned out to be longer than I was expecting :p

Hmm, I especially like the second one as it adds to the alchemist's guild a mathematical aspect of analysis. That may sound odd, but I'm thinking of adding a group of Equilibrium-Grammaton-Cleric-style guys, elite warriors who fight with perfect mathematical precision, so I could tack them onto the alchemist's faction.

Anyway, both good names - but I'd also like something snappier, shorter and more impressive for everyday-referring to the two factions. In the same vein as some of the other factions (Other existing faction names include the Executioners, Demaniacs, Cleansers and Steelclads).

Just as "cop" comes from the copper badges of a policeman, think about their uniforms -- and then pick one aspect to get made into a common nickname for them.

For instance, the merchant guards might be known to arrest people, and so are referred to as "copperlocks" or "locks," also based on their keyhole-shaped badges of authority.

Mercantile faction - The Invisible Hand (from Adam Smith's The Wealth of Nations)

Mercantile faction militant wing - The Invisible Fist

Alchemist faction - Ordo Via Aurum, O.V.A, the Eggheads

Alchemist faction militant wing - Knights of the Golden Egg

@Piratecat - definitely something to consider. I've already got names like the Masked for the Executioners (because they all wear metal masks). The mercantile faction's guards and warriors wear copper and crimson garb so a garb-themed name might well work nicely.

@Twiggly the Gnome - interesting names. Unfortunately the mercantile faction are extremely visible :) so Invisible in the name doesn't really work. It might be suitable for some sub-section of their organisation dedicated to more covert activities though.

Alchemists wise, not too keen on a faction called the Eggheads, amusing as it might prove :) I'm trying to think of other alchemical references I could apply to 'em...

Mercantile - The Open Hand
Militant - The Taking Hand

Alchemist - The Knowing Ones/Entropic Sages
Militant - Enforcers of Entropy

OK, not exactly perfect, I'll try to think of something else, too.
