Well, i am going to make a "Sage" class. I know the basics already. It will have a d6 hit die, and get up to 6th level spells. They will also have access to the same thing as Bardic Knowledge. Intelligence will be thier main stat. I know some of you may be wandering, why not just use a Bard? Well, i have my reasons. What i need help with is decidng on what spells this class should have. As well as their spell progression.

EDIT: Oh, and they will have 1/2 BAB.

Bardic knowledge isn't that great, it's certainly won't be a classes main feature. As a DM, I find its great for me cause I finally get to explain my homebrew. Anyway, is this supposed to be a PC or NPC class?

Build around Divination and Conjuration. Divination is obvious since these guys seem to be all about knowing things. The image that springs to mind is a Faust like character, summoning spirits to learn their secrets, so Conjuration. Throw in some Universal spells, maybe Enchantment or Illusion spells to round out the spell list. Ignore the Divine/Arcane distinction. Pick up a few flavor spells from the other schools. Stay away from combat spells.

You might also want to consider giving the class a bonus to certain Divination spells, or increased CL for Summon Monster type spells.

Might I also suggest a way to apply INT to certain physical things on occasion? Like Intelligent Defense or something.

In my experiance, if it is to be a PC class you are going to have to let it stand up in combat somehow.

You can also steal a few things from the Loremaster PrC (Applicable knowledge, etc.)

The class would become even weaker, but perhaps the HD should be brought down to d4.

Perhaps give the class bonus Skill feats...

Perhaps give it an ability similar to Bardic Music: When engaged in combat, the Sage may explain to his companions what his opponent's weak spots might be, etc. After 1 round of listening to the Sage, all characters within hearing distance gain a bonus to attack and damage rolls. There might be Knowledge DC's to beat in order to know applicable information.

I'm not exactly sure of how the "Aid another" action works (during or outside combat), but perhaps the Sage could have a feature that lets him "Aid" anyone on any skill check (within a certain limit) because he's so knowledgeable.

The sage could gain some spell-like abilities (comprehend languages, tongues, some detect spells, etc) as he goes up in levels.

Hope this helps.

Thanks, although i am keeping the d6 hit die. I think having the class focus on Divination and Conjuration is a good idea. I will comb the PHB for spells soon. :)

Assuming that this is meant to be a PC class you should probably through some things to aid in an adventure so the other party members don't lynch him.

No book- so all of these are from memory and most likely slightly off...

D20 modern's smart hero has an ability to organize/plan where he adds his intelligence modifier to attack rolls and it depreciates each round. So an 18 int would add +4/+3/+2/+1 for the first four rounds of combat.

Monte Cook's AU had an ability to use intelligence modifier in place of strength once per day for non-combat actions (although grapple was allowed). Let the character study a door and break it open through intellect.

I'd add many more than these so as to keep the class interesting.
