Need help picking an online tabletop

We use Fantasy Grounds for our online game and it's worked very well for us. Once the host is set up the clients are no problem to get connected (and the host wasn't hard to set up). We do Savage Worlds, so there's a ruleset out there for us. This is also cool because the players have access to the Savage Worlds ruleset when they're attached to the server (just like when people bring their books to the table).

I've never used maptools, but I've heard good things about it.

I always say that I'm more interested in getting people to try online gaming than selling them a program. I'm glad you're thinking of diving in!

We recently started using maptools, with everyone at the table. With a projector(on the wall), it just rocks.
This past session, the weather was awful and 2 guys stayed home and played from the comfort of their homes. They really enjoyed it. We are just starting to scratch the surface of the tool and don't want to go back.
There is a built in init tracker, and like someone else said, frameworks. There is a macro language, so you could, in theory setup your powers, with damage rolling included, etc.
We do cheat when it comes to voice. At least 2 of our guys have conf numbers we use, and I have an old star phone.

This is what my blog is all about. I started with OpenRPG, moved to Gametable (OSU-gt) and then discovered MapTool. Once I found MapTool, I was all set. I love this program, and I don't even use a framework - I've ended up building my own from scratch (just because I enjoy programming).

I've been using MapTool plus Skype for my online game since last August, and it's worked like a charm. Technical difficulties are exceedingly rare. We have players across the US plus one person in England, and it's been fantastic.

I hear nice things about Fantasy Grounds, but since it costs money and MapTool doesn't I feel like MapTool is the place to start - and the place to finish for me, since I'm totally happy with the program.

I love MapTool so much that I bought a projector so that I could use MapTool to run my in-person games as well. It's nice to have all of my maps and monsters pre-loaded and ready to go. It's even easy to throw together an encounter on the fly, especially once you've built up a library of monsters to pull from and tweak.

If you ever want to sit in on a MapTool game to see what it's like, or if you have any questions about using the program to run your game, please send me a message. I love to help DMs to start using this program.
